Fr Emil Kapaun was an Army Chaplain during the Korean War. He has a cause for sainthood from his home diocese (Wichita?) and the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. The main push for his sainthood is centered on the idea that he was martyred by the Communist Chinese because he caught pneumonia and was left to die in a “hospital” which was nothing more than a filthy shack. I
I truly admire him and I am sure he is saintworthy from his holy example and perserverance in the faith despite constant Atheist Communist propaganda. How do you prove martyrdom in a case like this?

There are 5 categories of martyrdom; the one into which Father Emil would presumably be classed is termed martyrdom ex aerumnis carceris or martyrdom from the hardships of incarceration.
