When I was small, I remember my Grandfather was very into the Freemasons organization and I had a couple of uncles that were
Shriners. I was always intrigued by this secret society, but never really aware of what they were all about. With little question, the Mason’s and Shriners have done great things in building children’s hospitals and the like. But, when I look up these groups on the Internet - I run into a lot of negative stuff. Some sites claim that these organizations are satanic. My mother used to tell me that Catholics would never be a part of these organization’s (I am not convinced that she really knew anything). Anyone have an informed opinion on this?

Pope Gregory XVI excommunicated all members of secret societies back in the 19th century. They played a large part in the secularization of the Europe’s constitutions especially in France. They are blamed a lot for the French Revolution and the role the French Revolution played for the secularization of France and the persecution of Catholics and the invasion of the Vatican in the 18th cen. However, the American Freemasons have been accused of far less severe charges. Still, they are a dangerous society. There are numerous books about Freemasons that are far more comprehensive about the subject.

Found this on the Envoy Magazine (excellent Catholic apologetic magazine, btw):
Q. What does the Catholic Church have to say about Freemasonry? Can a Catholic be a Freemason?
A. Can a California Golden Bear root for the Stanford Cardinal? Okay. So, no. Freemasonry is incompatible with the Catholic faith. Why? It teaches that a person can be equally pleasing to God while remaining in any religion; it’s a religion in its own right; and historically one of its primary objectives has been the destruction of the Catholic Church. It’s true that often in the United States it’s basically a social club, but it still contradicts orthodox Christiani-ty. Catholics who become Freemasons are excommunicated, a penalty confirmed in a statement by the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1983.

I have also heard that they were satanic. Is this true?

Some of my friends at school were invited to a meeting to watch a girl get “promoted”,I guess you could say, to a higher level in her group. I asked them the same question you asked and they said they read from the Bible and were nice people. The only strange thing is whenever they would ask what any of the symbols around the lodge meant, they wouldn’t tell them, however that’s probably just to uphold the seceracy of the society. My friends said they’re nice people, so I doubt they’re satanic. That’s just my opinion though after hearing this story. I could be wrong.

you better stay the hell away from masons my greatgrandfather wsa 33th degree mason and it was forbidden to have a christian burial and of course ITS AGAINST THE CC TO BE IN ANY SECRET SOCIATY

Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church, was a freemason, and many of the secret temple rituals are derived from Masonic rituals.

Someone else asked whether freemasonry is satanic…I don’t know whether it is directly, but the devil is certainly behind the scenes. He could very well be the driving supernatural force behind the creation and proliferation of any religion that hides the gospel from people.

I don’t know if fraternities in college couint.
Hey, interesting quote. Does anyone know of the background on Fraternities with any secret societies??? Plus alot of fraternities have there own problem with immorality. The group pressure can be risky. Thanks and God Bless.

In your country, in New York, there are a logia named “Rockefeller 666” and the founder of the Church of Satan was a masonic such as the new age movements and laicists movements. Free-masonry has had the greatest enemy of the church in centuries and this teachings are very although important.

I was in a sorority while in college, and it doesn’t have any ties with freemasonry. The initiation ceremony, in fact, had a lot of Christian symbolism and scripture. I understand that other sororities have a similar orientation.

Yes, there was a lot of drinking and immorality, but I became a Christian during my first year in the sorority. There were several of us who were very strong Christians, and it was an awesome opportunity to demonstrate our new life in Christ to others–to witness without words (and sometimes with words). Christ calls us to be in the world, just not of the world.

First off let me start off by saying I am a freemason and i am catholic. I am very pround of both. Please do not tell people to go here or go there and read about the free masons. If you wanna know…ask one. All i heard growing up was how bad the Catholic church was. And look now…Im one of the most active members in the church and a huge supporter of the church. We do not worship the devil. we are not evil. Many Masons are catholic. People get mad for saying things bout the catholic church that are not true,so why go off on the masons when you know NOTHING about them. Please respect everybody till u know the truth. God bless.

Just yesterday I was on the website of the California freemasons. They had written to the LA Archdiosces for clarification on this, since many prospective members ask this question. Although the original answer was that Catholics could be freemasons, on further review, the answer had to be retracted by the dioces (sorry, cant spell it). The final answer was, no, Catholics **cannot **be masons, under threat of ex-comm.

As far as the masons are concerned, however, anyone can belong. The only firm requirement for membership in the masons is the belief in one God. They don’t specify which God, so I guess anyone from any monotheistic faith can belong.

I’ve always felt this is so they can be a place where people of different faiths can just get along together and do good works. Its a shame that some people interpret this as somehow evil. Seems like the same reasoning that applied during the Inquisition.

And I think the story of what the masons have “done” to the RCC is probably a bit onesided.

The masons do have a past, and if they really are the successors of the Templars, they have quite a past. But so does the RCC. By and large, I think the masons/Templars have been a very tolerant, honest organization.

And, no, I am not a mason.

I believe i have your answers. It is quite a tale.

You must first understand the Masons are directly related to the group called the Illuminati. Let me start to explain.

When the age of enlightenment and reform hit europe, scientists such as Galileo and Copernicus were persecuted by the church. In Galileo’s case, he was forced to recant his views. The church slowed and destroyed much progress of science, and futher contuined a neverlasting war of The Sciences Vs Religion. The scienstists formed what is called the “Illuminati” Meaning the enlightened ones. They belived themselves to be doing humanity a greater good.

They came together forming a secret organization of scientists to oppose the church. They had been murdered, lied to, and sabataged. They were fighting back.

The Illuminati were known for their secret organization, their ability to infiltrate other organizations, and hold positions of power; as well as slowly reform. Churchhill once said that if the English had infiltrated the Nazi’s at the same level the Illuminati had infiltrated the British Parliment, the war would have been over a long time ago.

The one major front the Illumanti were the freemasons…Among the most famous Masons were George Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and many of our founding fatherse. Yet, the Illumanti only infiltrated the Masons, using them as a front, utilizing what power they had slowly gained.

This is the correlation between the Masons.

Satanists? In a way, they were the first Satanists out there. Yet, do not be the average ignorant christian and jump to conclussions. When the church first saw the threat of the Illuminati they labled them as Shaitan, later called Lucifer, meaning bringer of light. At this point the Illuminati had goals only to progress science, they belived neither in god nor satan. Yet, the church spread lies and to change the opinion of these groups, told of horrible acts of “satanism”…witchcraft, alchemy, the supernatural…

Opposing groups preceding this wave of propogonda tried to emulate the Illuminati thinking they were as we think, modern day satanists. They followed the rituals, dark, evil as the church described as well as followed the idol as Satan. The only sense the illumanti and the masons were satanists is the fact they thought themselvse as enlightened seraching for the truth; Lucifer: bringer of light.

Ancient “Satanism” - Scientific Advancement
Modern “Satanism” - Religious Cult

It is possible to be freemason and be catholic, whoever denies this is clearly mis informed and naive. Being a mason has nothing to do with being an illumanti. Even if one was an Illumanti ( the group is long dead, only a legend now ) why is it so wrong to believe that god exists under the proof of science? God’s laws to say.

Clear things up a bit?

This information is seen in Angels and Demons, a very good book. Also seen in easily googled sites as well.

Do not buy into this trash. Lucifer does not bring us light. He is the evil one. Read John 8:12. Jesus Christ, not Lucifer, is the light of the world.

The post was not to glorify Satanism, but merely stating that those that opposed the Church’s view on science were labeled Satanist.

The source that the poster cited was the novel Angels and Demons by Dan Brown of The Da Vinci Code fame. It’s nonsense.

It might be cited from Dan Brown, but I’ve heard that long before Dan Brown came on the scene.
