I have heard my whole life that gambling was a sin, but I can’t find a bible verse for this belief. WHere in the bible does it say that gambling is a sin?

Seriously, I used to be fundamentalists but I always assumed that this was in the bible. I can’t find anything though.

Sorry for being flip. I was saying that if it was in the Bible, we wouldn’t have Bingo.

But it is addressed in the Catechism:

2413: Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.

I don’t expect you will find such in the bible.

I know you will not find it in the Catechism of the Catholic Church

There isn’t a verse that specifically forbids gambling.

This is what I found in the catechism:

CCC 2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair waters and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.

editing: I see that tee was posting the same thing at the same time.

Gambling probably has a bad name among some Christians because the pagan Roman soldiers at the Crucifixion threw dice to see who would get Jesus’ tunic. (John 19:23-24)

Wow! I am a bit thunderstruck. I was always taught that gambling was something that a good Christian shouldn’t do. Even playing the lottery or Bingo was suspect. When I began to look up the specific verse though that claimed gambling was wrong, I found nothing. This surprised me. I wonder how many Christians, like me, assume that there is some biblical law against all gambling. It is even more troubling because I do read my bible but I still thought that the bible said not to gamble-even though I have never read a verse against gambling.

Just when I think that I am escaping from a fundamentalist’s mindset, I find that I have more mental junk to throw out.:crying:

Ummmm… how, precisely, did the Apostles select a replacement for Judas Iscariot?

The bible does not say it ,and the bible also does not say drinking is a sin.
Getting drunk is a sin.
You will not find gamling or drinking as a sin.
You mush of either is a sin.

Gee I hope not… if that is so then I am wrong for booking all those bets for the past 16 years! (Casino Dealer at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City)

(Acts 1:26 DRB) And they gave them lot, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
