I’ve been interested in Kierkegaard ever since I’ve discovered he’s a Christian AND the father of existentialism. Does anyone know any good resources from/about him? Like material that I can use for apologetics, etc?

He is a difficult writer to get to grips with. His final work ‘Attack upon Christendom’ is quite accessible and worth reading. Also the book ‘The Parables of Kierkegaard’ collects some of the stories he used to illustrate his points and is also quite accessible. Since he came from the Lutheran tradition using him in specifically Catholic apologetics is problematic.

What about any “Kierkegaard for Dummies” like books, so at least I could understand his background/philosophy in a simpler way?

Dear, Whovian:

I am a specialist in Kierkegaard. If you would like a biography, I recommend Alastair Hannay’s Kierkegaard. It’s a bit in-depth, but his writing is lucid. Lowrie’s A Short Life of Kierkegaard is decent. If you would like an anthology of Kierkegaard’s works with an introduction before each section, check out Howard- and Edna Hong’s The Essential Kierkegaard. There’s a plethora of basic “what-is-Kierkegaard-talking-about” books. Clare Carlisle’s Kierkegaard: A Guide for the Perplexed is a good one.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Yours,

Tim
