Can anyone recommend any good, orthodox Catholic parishes in the southern Orange County, California, area? I have family there and I am not overly impressed with what I see every time I attend Mass while visiting. I’m not interested in Traditionalist or schismatic parishes, thank you, since some people seem to equate orthodoxy with Traditionalism. Thanks.

Fidelis,

As I live in northern Orange County, I cannot help you that much. I would go to the diocese web site and look at the list of parishes in south Orange County.

If I had to guess, I think San Juan Capistrano would be your best bet as it does have an indult Mass.

Also, try SAN FELIPE de JESUS CHURCH in Capistrano Beach. The parish is mostly hispanic, but the pastor Fr John Bradley is very good. He was at my parish before being made pastor. His Liturgies were very reverent.

I live in Orange County,

I recommend them Highly!!:
-St. Mary’s by the Sea in Hunington Beach(English and Latin Novus Ordo), the best parish in Orange County, they way they ough to do the English Mass throughout the country.

-St. Michael’s Abbey of the Nobertine Fathers in Silverado Canyon
(Sung Latin Novus Ordo on Sundays, English Novus Ordo on Mon, Wed, Fri)
www.abbeynews.net
Exit the 5 Freeway on El Toro Rd. Go north for about 7 miles on El Toro Rd.

-Mission San Juan Capristrano(Basillica and Serra Chapel)
(English Novus Ordo and an indult Traditional Latin Mass fully approved by the Bishop)

-the only remaining indult is on Sundays at Serra Chapel at 8 am

Faith is deterioting in Orange County, under our current Bishop, non-traditionalist conservatives are not happy with our bishop either.

Iohannes,

I thought about St Marys by the Sea in Huntington Beach, but it isn’t in south OC.
One other problem is that their pastor is retiring at the end of the month, and with it the Latin Mass. 😦

A person who I trust has said that Bishop Brown has stated that he firmly believes in having the Mass in the vernacular. When I mentioned that it would be nice to have a Latin Mass at our parish, this person said that we would never get permission from the Bishop (for the reasons stated above.)

The Bishop murdered the Traditional Latin Mass at the small parish, but they are continuing with the Latin Novus Ordo Ad Orientem.

There is no permission needed for a Latin Novus Ordo since it is the norm, any priest can say Latin Novus Ordo publically or privately, the bishop cannot do a thing about it.

My wife and I were thinking of visiting St. Mary’s by the Sea…

We have attended the Tridentine Mass here in LA County, but are curious about hearing the Pauline Mass in Latin. Are there differences from the contemporary Mass said in the venacular? Or is it just the “everyday” Mass in Latin? Do you receive Communion kneeling at the Communion rail as in the Tridentine Mass?

Thanks!

The Mass of Paul VI is the normative Mass for the Latin Church. It is, as you stated, the “everyday Mass” but in Latin instead of the vernacular. Reception of communion is the same as those Mass said in the vernacular – that is, normally received standing either on the tongue or in the hand.

Deacon Ed

Deacon Ed, actually the few parishes that celebrate the Latin Novus Ordo usually still distribute communion to parishoners who kneel at the rail. Some examples are St Agnes in St. Paul MN, Holy Rosary and Annunaction, both in Houston and Assumption Grotto in Detroit

I will be visiting northern Orange County (near Placentia) for Christmas. Could anyone recommend a good parish near by?

There is a possibility that my very conservative, Presbyterian father-in-law will come along with us so I would very much like to avoid a bad experience.

Many thanks for any pointers.

In Christ,
John

John,

I would highly recommend my own parish, St. Joseph. If your father doesn’t like us, there’s a Presbyterian church right next door. We’re at 717 N. Bradford in Placentia.

A church with reverent English Masses is St. John Vianney Chapel on Balboa Island. Take the 405 to Jamboree south about 6 miles. Cross over PCH and Jamboree turns into Marine Ave. on the island. The chapel is on your left. Homilies are solid most of the time. And the church has recognizably Catholic architecture.

I was wondering if I was going to see this post here :bigyikes:

But seriously, I have known Deacon Ed on various forums for a number of years now and would take any of his recommendations with confidence.:tiphat:

Before someone misconstrues my comment above, I meant about Deacon Ed mentioning his own parish. I was not commenting about the other part.:o
