If heaven/hell/purgatory is a state of being rather then a spacial place, as the Pope says it is, then what happens when we receive a glorified body after the second coming? I know that the glorified body is not subject to all of the restrictions our body is, but it is still a body and would need a place to be, wouldn’t it? Please explain. Thank you.

There will be a new heaven and a new earth. We will apparently have glorified bodies there.

Revelation 21:

I saw a new heaven and a new earth. For the first heaven and the first earth was gone: and the sea is now no more.http://www.scriptours.com/images/spacer.gif
2And I, John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

When did the pope declare heaven was definitely NOT a place?

Two paragraphs from the Catechism are pertinent:

326 The Scriptural expression “heaven and earth” means all that exists, creation in its entirety. It also indicates the bond, deep within creation, that both unites heaven and earth and distinguishes the one from the other: “the earth” is the world of men, while “heaven” or “the heavens” can designate both the firmament and God’s own “place” - “our Father in heaven” and consequently the “heaven” too which is eschatological glory. Finally, “heaven” refers to the saints and the “place” of the spiritual creatures, the angels, who surround God. 186

546 Jesus’ invitation to enter his kingdom comes in the form of parables, a characteristic feature of his teaching. 261 Through his parables he invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. 262 Words are not enough, deeds are required. 263 The parables are like mirrors for man: will he be hard soil or good earth for the word? 264 What use has he made of the talents he has received? 265 Jesus and the presence of the kingdom in this world are secretly at the heart of the parables. One must enter the kingdom, that is, become a disciple of Christ, in order to “know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven”. 266 For those who stay “outside”, everything remains enigmatic. 267

Spidey is correct. There will be a new heaven and a new earth.

Stay tuned for further developments. 🙂

Peace in Christ…Salmon

I don’t think “a state of being” means there won’t be places to be. For instance, we are in a state of being right now while we are in our fearsome and awesomely made bodies and here we are in this place, earth. Even Jesus in His glorified body, after the Resurrection and before the Ascension, was here on this earth. So state of being doesn’t preclude there being a place. It could refer to our new glorified bodies according to our individual capacity to enjoy heaven in all the forms God has created it to be. Our glory will not be equal but merited according to the “treasure” we have stored "that no thief can reach not moth destroy (Luke 12:34.)

I guess that I never heard exactly where or when JPII said that heaven was definately not a place but I briefly caught on that he said it was a state of being this morning on Relevant Radio. I appreciate the help in answering this question. Thank you and God bless.

I think that after the final judgment Heaven will be both a state of being and a place. In fact, after the end times, when we have our resurrected bodies, all of space and time will be our purview. Like the resurrected body of Jesus, our bodies will be able to traverse space and time at will, without the limits we currently experience. But it is the beatific vision of the Trinity, wherein we see God “face to face,” that is the essence of Heaven.
