James 1:13
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

If jesus was god,then how come he was tempted by the devil when james clearly states that god cannot be tempted by evil?

I’ll take a shot at this, even though I’m far from an expert and someone on this board probably has a much better answer.

I believe that the passage which you quote is simply saying that God can never give into temptation. It doesn’t say that no one will try to tempt Him, just that they will fail miserably. The devil tried to tempt Jesus, but he never had any chance at success.

Giving into temptation is saying no to God. God cannot say no to Himself. I hope that I answered that correctly.

Jesus was God, but was not fully empowered at the time. Remember the passage from the Gospel which says Jesus could not yet send the spirit because He was not yet glorified?

Because of His human nature, He was tempted in the desert. But the quote from James, written many years after the event, proclaims the “result” of Jesus’ successful rejection of temptation.

In other words, Jesus is God - Jesus “was” tempted by the devil before His full glorification - the temptation failed - Jesus has now been glorified - therefore… God cannot be tempted by evil. If God, even in the partially vulnerable form of the son of man could not be tempted successfully, He certainly cannot now that the son of man has been fully glorified and empowered.

Jesus could not be tempted to do something sinful, doesn’t mean the devil couldn’t try???

You’re chasing a red herring.

James wasn’t dictating ultimate truths. He was just addressing a false understanding that God tempts people. James may have said something (in a sense) inaccurate in the process. But he wasn’t talking about Jesus, and to apply his words in that way is a bit overwrought.

This is kinda like taking Jesus’s statement “No man is good except God alone,” and using it as an argument that Mary was a bad person. Scripture is not meant to be micromanaged.
