From the Holland (MI) Sentinel:
Lack of production activity at the LG Chem battery cell plant in Holland is becoming a Republican campaign talking point as an example of stimulus bill spending that hasn’t lived up to expectations.

“The stimulus plan was designed to create jobs in the short term,” said Senate contender and former congressman Pete Hoekstra. “It doesn’t exactly meet the criteria of stimulus for me.”

Two plants in Holland that produce lithium ion cells — LG Chem and Johnson Controls — received roughly $150 million each from a federal stimulus bill. The cells have other applications, but are best known for their use in some electric and hybrid vehicles.

LG Chem since April has been running “rolling furloughs” for its 200 employees, based on a lack of a demand for the lithium-ion cells that it is tooled to produce, The Sentinel was the first to report a month ago. Other media have recently picked up the reports as campaigns started referencing the issue. LG Chem on Tuesday confirmed the plant hasn’t started commercial production of the cells yet.

As Romney said in the debate, “I had friend who said you don’t just pick the winners and losers, you pick the losers.”

Yet another example…

BTW, how do you all like $150M of taxpayer money going to a Korean company (LG a/k/a Lucky GoldStar)?

The whole thing sounds like Obama is trying to perfect the technology of buying votes in Michigan. If electric and hybrid cars made economic sense, they could succeed without a government subsidy.
