I have a divorced friend whose first marriage was never annulled. She has remarried outside of the church. I am wondering if she is able to receive Holy Eucharist. She is in the end stages of cancer and due to her physical/health condition is living in a “brother/sister” relationship with her new husband. Does she need to have an annulment before she is able to receive Communion or can she receive now?

Thanks,
Molly

Sorry to hear about your friend. Right off the top of my head I would say she would need to go to confession with a solid priest and seek counsel there.

God Bless your friend.

I have personal experience with this. The best thing to do is have your friend meet with your/her pastor. As I said my experience with the process is that if your friend makes a proper confession and then refrains from marital relations she can receive communion.

May the grace of our lord be with you and your friend.

Yes to the above.
