I have a divorced friend whose first marriage was never annulled. She has remarried outside of the church. I am wondering if she is able to receive Holy Eucharist. She is in the end stages of cancer and due to her physical/health condition is living in a “brother/sister” relationship with her new husband. Does she need to have an annulment before she is able to receive Communion or can she receive now?

Thanks,
Molly

She should talk to her parish priest. On the surface I’d say no. 😦

Is her brother/sister relationship her own choice, or is it only a medical necessity? If she has chosen to refrain from marital relations so as to follow Church teaching, she should be able to receive reconciliation and, following that, Eucharist.

She should speak with her pastor or confessor ASAP.
