My question comes from watching the movie exorcism of Emily Rose. I do believe in demons and angels. The bible speaks of the battle between good and evil. However I know the Holy Spirit that lives in me is stronger than any demon or even Satan himself. have just never seen or been around it. And dont want to . Seems the Catholic faith has alot of experiance at this. And why just the Catholic faith?

Although I do not believe that it is only in the realm of the cahtolic faith that one experiences demonic oppression or possession, I believe that the devil HATES the Catholic fiath because it is the one with much of the ‘stuff’ that angers the devil besides Jesus Himself. The catholic faith has the fullness of the truth thus more of a threat nonetheless. Mary is a primary candidate…he is enraged with her, also with our Eucharistic Presence which does not exist in any other denomination other than Orthodox. Why do you think the Satanists want a consecrated Host for?

The devil has much to worry about within the faith…and it will continue to be so. He hates ALL priests…although the holier the priest the more the hate. All priests are a threat to him while not all christians are a threat to him at all. We have many sacramentals that irritate him to no end…the Cross being number 1, holy water, etc.

I was involved in an exorcism with 2 priests, and bishop and a couple of ladies. The woman was a baptized Catholic and was possessed…although in a milder form than Emily Rose. But not by much!

You want good reading on the devils’ work…read Malachi Martin’s book on exorcism and there are five good ‘cases’ from different backgrounds…I find the book very well written…

It is very real, and anyone who denies God, and opens the door to evil, can be possesed.

I did have an experience when I was in the army, where a couple of individuals in my platoon, had initially partaken in seances, and eventually were overtaken by evil. One guy, was possessed by a demon named LeRoux I believe he said his name was, kind of looked like a pig, and this individual who was possesed would try to kill himself, or do bodily harm to himself. The other individual, who just happened to be his roommate, was possesed by one named Nesmedesus or something like that, the guy was a friend, also happened to be gay, and I felt really bad for him. In one incidence while this friend was possesed by Nesmedesus, he was on the ground slithering like a snake, yelling and crying at another friend of mine and myself, to get away from him because we were sons of God, another incidence, while in my room, he was crying, and looking up to the ceiling he would yell out,in a very frightned tone “AAAAAAh! look there she is in the east”. I believe he was referring to Mother Mary. Eventually the friend that was gay was transferred to the states, coincidently, I myself was transfered to the same unit he was at, although what happened earlier never came up, once while he was intoxicated, he turned to me and said out of the blues, remember me in Germany.
Something to think about.

A “Christian” who is filled with the Holy Spirit cannot be Demon Possessed. Our bodies are the Temples of the Holy Spirit. The Christian can be impressed (Satanic forces put thought in mind), obsessed (keeps “self thinking” the Satan planted thought), repressed (fights thought with own will power), subpressed and depressed (cannot fight it off with own will).

Proof there is no regeneration in Baptism. The Temple of the Holy Spirit cannot be possessed by a demon. What, the demon is more powerful than the Holy Spirit? I think not.

I don’t understand your first two sentences, but here’s what I do understand: No Christian thinks a demon has any power over God. Demonic posession can be only of the created and never of the Creator–in any aspect. God is inviolable.

Here’s what the Catechism says on exorcism, and its relationship to baptism:

1673 When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism.(178 - Cf. Mk 1:25-26; 3:15; 6:7, 13; 16:17.) Jesus performed exorcisms and from him the Church has received the power and office of exorcizing. In a simple form, exorcism is performed at the celebration of Baptism. The solemn exorcism, called “a major exorcism,” can be performed only by a priest and with the permission of the bishop. The priest must proceed with prudence, strictly observing the rules established by the Church. Exorcism is directed at the expulsion of demons or to the liberation from demonic possession through the spiritual authority which Jesus entrusted to his Church. Illness, especially psychological illness, is a very different matter; treating this is the concern of medical science. Therefore, before an exorcism is performed, it is important to ascertain that one is dealing with the presence of the Evil One, and not an illness. (179 - Cf. CIC, can. 1172.)

It is not necessarily just those who deny God…many of the saints have been tormented by them…read about St Padre Pio for instance…the better the person the worse the torments because the Devil wishes to deny salvation to humans nothing more nothing less.

God allows evil for a purpose, as a wake up call for the weak or a means to strengthen the strong.

Hi Melanie, the book of Job, clearly illustrates that Satan can oppress and attack us externally. But, internally ( possession ) scripture is plain “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 basically Christians by our spiritual nature are drawing near to God, we need to practice resisting the devil.

Nevermind, it has already been addressed.

You don’t believe in backslidding? If you do, your argument is completely illogical for “proof”.

If you are OSAS, I understand your position while respectfully disagreeing with it, as do the majority of Christians.

God Bless,
Maria

Emily Rose seemed like a very devout young woman before being posessed. The film explained the divine purpose for God allowing this devout young woman to be posessed, so a demon would not have to be more powerful than the Holy Spirit in order to posess a believer.

Look at what was done to the faithful Job.

If you think this is only a “Catholic thing” check out the thread “Exorcist casting the devil out of Tulsa (legitimate? spiritual vaudeville?)”

If God will for a man to be tormented by demons. He may well be. This happens to test the faith and purify. The book of Job lists such occurences. Of course usually posession would enter a man through occult activity or simply sin. Baptism is great but one can lose the vivifying grace within if one so chooses. Some of the most wicked sinners have been baptised.
