When exactly did the whole “Church scandal” with come out in 2002? What was the first thing that came out? I started school that January and didn’t have access to news very often nor was I a person all that interested in watching the news. Then, that summer I walked Crossroads and was even less in touch with what was going on in the news.

I think the first I heard of it was when I heard my grandma talking about it as if I knew what she was talking about. So really all I heard was “small percentage of priests had molested children.” I don’t even think I heard about any cover-up till almost a year after the event.

Wasn’t it only one diocese that was switching the priests around? Others have argued with me that it was the entire Church that covered it up.

I want to know this stuff so that I know better as to what I’m talking about when I defend the faith. Anyone willing to help?

It was the Fr. John Geoghan case in Boston which launched the scandal into the national spotlight in January of 2002. And then Fr. Paul Shanley’s abuses were even more egregious, which ultimately led to Cardinal Bernard Law’s downfall in December of that year.

I for one still remember all of it with too much clarity. And the aftermath is still continuing to be felt today. Though many lessons were learned and (arch)diocesan policies changed to reflect them, the healing process especially among the victims (and others) is far from over. And some may never heal or reconcile themselves with the Church, very sad…😦

The Church still is in need of much prayer.:gopray:

Thank you for reminding us that the Church needs prayer.

In the TLM, the priests did the Confiteor first, and then the Congregation. The way that was done reminded us that we need to pray for our priests, that our prayers and attention may be the only things keeping the priests on the straight and narrow.

We don’t do that anymore, so we don’t have the reminder. Maybe, we should consider these scandals to be a “Reminder” that we need to pray and watch out for our priests.

Maybe, if we can remember to do that, we can avoid the pain and humiliation of the scandals.

So, pray for the Church, and most esp. for the priests, that they not be put to the test, and that God give them the strength to live Godly lives and resist the temptations that come their way.

In Christ, Michael

Lets not forget to pray for the victims also. Thanks.
