I’m about to read Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. Now, I actually did read it before. But it was a very long time ago and I only got like half way through it. Due to me trying to better understand G.W.F Hegel, I’ve decided I wanted to read Kant again.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should go about reading through this? It’s a very complex work that is not always easy to understand. I want to keep the motivation for me going as I read through this.

Also, has anyone else read all the way through it? What did you think about did and did it have any influence on how you view logic and the world?

I always found that a swift walk every hour or two whilst reading Kant therapeutic. Clears the head and refreshes the will. One of the most boring old f…ts I ever had the need to read (for my philosophy degree.)
A good whisky is always advisable as a little reward after every chapter, or a chocolate or two.
One or two of the more mathematical chapters of Lonergan’s " Insight A study of Human Understanding" is a worthwhile distraction.
Why this masochistic drive? Life is far too short when there are women, wine and song out there somewhere. ( In a completely chaste, Catholic milieu of course.)
I have never met anyone who was a better man for reading Kant. Now, Germain Grisez is another matter entirely. Worth a read.

I already see what you mean as I just started reading. Ugh, the mind can only take in so much at a time. It seems like Kant is just jamming all of it down your throat! But Hegel is still worse in my opinion. Lol

I do have a good understanding of some of the terminology though seeing that I have read some of the other Idealist. I also quickly read through his Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals a few days ago to give me a sort of introduction. Still, Kant is not easy I’ll say that much.

It seems to me that the Enlightenment philosophers keep getting more confusing. I could understand Hobbes, Bacon and, to a certain extent, Descartes. But Hume, Kant and Hegel are a different matter. The one thing I couldn’t stand about Kant is his statement that reality conforms to our minds, not the other way around. Maybe he’s trying to hide that part under his confusing literary technique. 🤷

I read that book last year. Right now I am reading the Phenomenology of Spirit by Hegel
