Some walked out of mass as he spoke against abortion at the end of a first communion mass.

Fr McVeigh “said he reflected and prayed about saying anything at that particular mass, but had a duty of conscience to his parishioners, and it was his last chance before the referendum,” which would allow abortion on wide grounds in the Republic of Ireland.

Media reports, which generally personally attacked him, are typified by the headline in the “Express,” “Priest sparks church walk-out by turning family service into anti-abortion rant.”

Those kids are going to hear about this sue in one place or another, and soon. That might not have been the ideal Mass to present the issue, but would there be as many adults attending other Mases?

Exactly so. Maybe if more priests had been more outspoken and been the leaders they are called to be things would not have been as bad as they are . There have been other instanced of this in the lead u to the referendum and again folk have walked out, saying that Mass is not the place for that. ie for mentioning the death of babies, After all,Jesus grew in Mary’s womb…

I just don’t know that this is appropriate at a First Communion Mass.

An insert to the bulletin? So it could be ignored and thrown in the bin? Priests need to speak about these things. Actually speak about them. I can recall the number of homilies that actually challenged me or addressed something more taboo that no one wants to talk about on one hand. And have fingers left over. This was an important moment that could not be brushed off to a few lines in the weekly bulletin.

I agree that it’ s an important topic but my personal thought is that it should not be done the same Day as Holy Communion. That is just my personal opinion. God bless.

Wondering why? These children are blessed to have been born. To have reached this Day

I agree with you that they were blessed to have been born. My thoughts are that Holy Communion is an incredible day where it is witnessed for the first time young children and older sometimes of God receiving the body and blood, soul and divinity of our savior.

This is the source and summit of our Faith. Abortion may not even be appropriate for that age group. I think it’s irresponsible. That’s why. The focus should be on this important day for our young people and not clouded by speaking of aortion.

I think the reason he did this was because the referendum was about to happen. So we can’t really blame him for saying it during First Communion. The events just happened to coincide.

Well to expand the first Communion narrative, Jesus in Saint John’s gospel was explaining the reality of His presence, foreshadowing the Eucharist and many walked away.

Jesus let them go and kept speaking.

As hard as it is for some left liberal media and even clergy to accept, this is exactly the right response.

Keep talking and let them go.

Jesus was not emotionally blackmailed because people left. He was rigidly defiant in speaking truth.

Body and Blood… sin and death?

Let us not exclude these aspects on such a holy day.

And surely in this age of TV etc no child can be unaware of the situation here? There have been huge posters and campaigners everywhere and surely parents will have explained to the children what it is about? Maybe folk do not realise how the campaign took over Ireland body and soul? Maybe more would have voted no had the horrible reality been faced ?
