Is it a sin to pray the Hail Mary in the shower?

I don’t just mean in the shower, but also if you’re changing, or basically any time it would be inappropriate for your to be in her presence. I’ve thought about this both ways. For one thing, you’re invoking her assistance and attention, which you should only be doing in modesty and decency. On the other hand, her soul is in a spiritual realm, so she’s not so much looking at your body as much as your soul. But I’m torn between these two.

If no one, anywhere, ever, in the history of the world, thought X was a problem or a sin, that’s a good sign X isn’t a problem or a sin.

I do that and I do not see any problem with it. Cleansing your body and preparing your soul for a new day cannot really be a bad thing. Remember that God sees you at all times and the saints are in communion with him. I would be more concerned about being seen when I am sinning than when I am cleansing myself.

I don’t see a problem with it either. I pray in the shower sometimes. I look at it this way. In the eyes of God I am a child. God sees me at all times anyway as someone else said. He created me. Mary is my mother and I am her child. There is no reason to be ashamed.

I am a mom, a wife, and a full-time employee. My life is surrounded by noise, noise, noise. The best “quiet time” I can ever get in my day is A) during the shower, B) using the restroom (on a good day. Usually I hear “mommy, I want in!” from the other side of the door) and C) at bed time. I don’t want my prayers to only happen at bed time, so I pray whenever my brain has a moment to sit and rest on God. So what if that is in the shower or on the toilet or while you are getting dressed or what have you. 🙂 We are children in the eyes of Mary and in the eyes of God. I don’t think twice if my baby girl is talking to me while naked, or if she wants to have a conversation while on the potty, or if she wants to tell me all about her day while splashing in the tub. 👍

When you come out of death, you will probably be naked.

So what could be wrong with prayer while naked this side of life?

If our LORD could go back to Heaven naked, certainly you can pray naked.

“If we were meant to be naked, we would be born that way.”

God Bless, ICXC NIKA

Wow, if this is your biggest concern about your spritual health, its just a matter of time before you attain Sainthood…Congratulations! 😃

Heh, far from it. This is just something I’ve been thinking about. Because sometimes I want to pray a Hail Mary while I’m using the restroom or showering or changing or something, and I feel guilty about it. But judging from everyone’s answers here, perhaps I shouldn’t.

To the OP: please find yourself a spiritual director and a regular confessor. Ask for their advice and stick to it. Please do not rely too much on random advice from anonymous laypersons on Internet forums.

Your question make me think of the joke about a diocesan priest and a Jesuit. The Jesuit was smoking a nice cigar when it was time to start to pray the liturgy of the hours and the diocesan priest encoraged him to get rid of it. After a heated discussion the Jesuit agreed to talk to his spiritual director and seek advice. When they met again the diocesan priest was curious about the meeting with the spiritual director in regard to smoking a cigar during prayer time and the Jesuit informed him that his spiritual director told him that there was nothing wrong when asked if it was fine to pray while smoking a cigar.😃

What I am trying to tell you is that you should not rationalize things too much, and that you should pray whenever you feel like. Prayer can be very useful in strange circumstances just because it would help avoid temptations. However, it is a very good practice to set aside time for prayers and to avoid any other activity during that time.

Lol…nothing wrong with praying while smoking…what about smoking while praying…!!!

@ poster…absolutely nothing wrong with it,so long as you are not distracted and can focus on your prayers, not just the hail Mary, but any other prayer, anytime, anywhere. Pray without ceasing

Twisting the topic just a little - but on the same wavelength - I am currently working on a new musical setting for the Byzantine Divine Liturgy. My inspirations come whenever they want, but much of the work gets done when I’m in the washroom, because the washroom fan makes a distinct and solid hum that can easily be used as a bass harmony to test out certain melodies. How’s that for an unconventional development strategy? 😛

of course it is not a sin! that is just silly. but i want to tell you something and hope u read this. i fear that you have something that i used to suffer from called scrupulosity. from many of ur posts, the questions u ask and ur reasoning, and the way u over examine things, i fear u do have it. it is not bad or the end of the world if u have it, and it can be fought and even ridden of. many saints suffered from scrupulosity. it is a form of OCD, but religious OCD. i will pray for you and i cannot say for sure if you have it but it sounds like it. if u want help message me and i can 👍

OP, it’s fine. Just so long as you are making time to pray rather than trying to squeeze it in.

Thanks everyone for your concern. I have to say I’m a little insulted that everyone thinks I have scrupulosity. But thanks again.

Are you insulted because you think that you have scrupulosity or because you assume that everybody thinks that you have scrupulosity?

Dont be insulted…I have scrupulosity. And this is one thing that I have aften srupulize over. And no you pray wherever, whenever, pray without ceasing.:signofcross:

Scrupulosity has to do with fear of offending God over minor things. On the other hand, as we grow in sanctity the Holy Spirit will help us form our consciences better, and we will notice more things we do and consider all our actions and how God sees them. The difference between this and scrupulosity is the servile fear. For I do not at this moment suffer from servile fear, which comes not from love but from a lack of love, and I seek to make sure I do not offend our Lord out of a filial fear, that is to say, because I so dearly love my God and would never want to offend Him. Yet this doesn’t mean I shouldn’t still take the normal means of researching whether this or that action offends God. And I think asking for people’s informed opinions on the matter is not too out of line. This is why I take insult at being called scrupulous.
