Is it a sin to use artficial Insemination?

Is it a sin to use artficial insemination as way of becoming pregant? I am currently taking classes to convert to catholic. I am not married and have one child already from artficial insemination. I would like one more. I feel strongly about having childern in my life, but not about being married.

Dear cosaile

In a word, yes. Children are not responsible for their own conception. The conception of a human being requires a man and a woman. The fact that it is possible to eliminate the presence of the man after conception, does not mean that such presence is not needed. All children have a need and a RIGHT to a father as well as a mother. To deliberately deny a child that right is a mortal sin.

The desire to have offspring is natural and necessary for the future of the race. Just as children are naturally the result of the union of an egg and a sperm, they are also the result of the love of a husband and a wife. The presence of both parents is the natural context in which children come into existence, are nurtured and taught and eventually reach adulthood. This is the way God has designed human life.

To pull parenthood out of its natural context for the purpose of satisfying one’s own feelings is to reduce the child to an appendage of oneself—rather than recognize its own individuality and rights. Children are people.
