I cannot comment much in the way of international relations but I will say that I am praying for peace in the Middle East and around the world.

I think that is an excellent idea, particularly regarding the Middle East and the situation in Iran.

This looks worrying. 😦
It is Iran using its proxy on Israel, as it threatened, to try and provoke it into war.

Iran has threatened to unleash Hezbollah if Israel continues to prepare to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities. In the event of a war, the regime is going to attack Israel via the proxies Hamas and Hezbollah, thus spreading the conflict into Lebannon. If Syria is still in its current state by then, you will be faced with a war spanning Israel, Iran, Syria, Lebannon and likely the Arab Emirate states/Saudi Arabia who are anti-Iran and frightened for their welfare will become involved. If Turkey does not manage to stop these insane border attacks between itself and Syria, it would already have spread to Turkey, which is the gateway into Europe.

Yes, it is worrying but Seamus’ initial angle on the situation was wrong (ie it is Hezbollah provoking war with Israel on orders from Iran, not Israel provoking war with Hezbollah).

i haven’t been able to watch much news. i did hear about Israel shooting down a drone, but the last i heard, they were not sure from where it orginated. have they proven that it was Hezbollah?
I don’t think anything has been proven, although it seems to be the prevailing theory.
The IDF said Saturday that the drone arrived in Israel from the west after flying over the Mediterranean and the Gaza Strip. It said the incident is under investigation.
After the drone traveled east some 35 miles (56 km) across Israel’s southern Negev desert, the drone was shot down above a forest in an unpopulated area near the border with the West Bank, the IDF spokesperson said.
The estimation from within Israel’s security establishment is that the UAV was operated by Hezbollah, and flew south over the Mediterranean sea before breaching Israeli airspace from the south.

If the drone came from Lebanon, it took circuitous route, since Gaza and the Negev Desert are well to the south.

Iran is trumpeting the drone incursion as demonstrating a weakness in Israel’s air defenses. This makes me think the drone, if it was Iranian-supplied, was intended to score a symbolic victory, rather than intended to be a serious threat. Having tipped their hand, Iran is allowing Israel opportunity to devise counter-measures to future drones…

thanks Dale M. this does seem a bit unnerving though. did Israel did not see it coming from the mediterranean until it got over their land? these drones are becoming very popular. i know we have used them in southern Arizona in the hunt for illegal aliens crossing the border and they obviously have been used in our war against the terrorists in the middle east. i think they are here to stay.

May I take an intra-thread poll?

If Israel hits Iran before the election, it will help
  • Romney
  • Obama
  • Neither

First message in this forum,

I think Romney will benefit from such an act, though I seriously dout it could happened.

Israel’s prime minister is alot of things but first and formost he is a smart man who cares for his country and for human life, which means he won’t attack a country stronger and bigger than its own, without the necessery insurances.
At least not in the current situation in the middle east anyway.

i think he realizes that between now and the election, he may not have barack obama for support.

This is one of the reasons that a significant number of people are opposed to any mandate telling Hezbollah that they must disarm. Right now, Hezbollah are the only force in Lebanon capable of making things difficult for the IDF.
On the other hand, if the terrorist group Hezbollah was not armed, maybe Israel wouldn’t feel the need to violate Lebonese air space.

Besides, this is in response to the drone.

Yes that is surely one of his main concerns but it isn’t the only one.

The situation in the middle east isn’t what it used to be and countries like Egypt and Turkey won’t approve and probably won’t seat quitely if an attack in the needed scales will happend in the close future.
We have to remember that things have changed drastically regrading the raltions between the countries surrounding Israel in the past 5 years.

Anyway, things are realy sensitive at the moment and any foreign interference will not be a wise, or at least that how I see it.

I feel like I got side tracked from the main theme of the thread so I’ll stop here =)
