I’m a bit confused. If you give up something for Lent, like coffee, doesn’t that mean that it should be given up all throughout Lent? Or are you permitted to enjoy the coffee on Sundays?
Sundays are traditionally ‘little Easters’, since we celebrate the risen and eternally present Christ in the Eucharist. For this reason even in Lent the joy of the day can override the penitential character of Lent in general.
However, a lot of people do find it easier to continue their Lenten self-denial even on the Sundays. Especially if you’re doing something like giving up smoking, it is far preferable to do so.
