A pro-abortion group is sending letters to 60,000 churches in an attempt to intimidate them in the upcoming elections.
With churches holding voter registration drives, with pastors talking about the importance of pro-life and religious issues in the election and with churches allowing pro-lifers to distribute literature based on their First Amendment rights, the threats could adversely effect pro-life election efforts.
Mathew Staver, chairman of the Liberty Counsel, a pro-life legal group, talked about the letters.
Yep

“In a national mass mailing, the left-wing organization Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) has advised the leadership of 60,000 targeted churches across the nation not to become involved in “partisan politicking,” he said. “Their true goal, unwritten but hidden between the lines: To SILENCE the truth from being spoken in American pulpits and to MUZZLE people of faith on the vital issues that will be decided in the 2012 elections.”

It won’t work in my parish. Father Mullaney tells it like it is every Sunday at Latin Mass. Every Sunday!

If they think Sacred Heart parish is gonna fall for this. They better think again!

Fr. Stevens and Hagarty will not… i repeat… will NOT stand for this as they continually say in their homilies at daily and weekend Mass

I’ve long ago learned not to put any stock in anything lifenews says. The article title is “Liberals send Election Intimidation…,” but the actual article starts, “A pro-abortion group…” Nowhere do they use the word “liberal,” and “liberal” does not equate to pro-abortion. I’m a liberal and am pro-life. So much for lifenews. Such “reporting” is a good reason of many why I would never under any circumstances vote Republican except on the local level where I know the candidates personally..

While I know that a pastor cannot tell you specifically how to vote for and have the church keep it’s tax exempt status, I was always taught that they could, however, speak openly about policies and social issues and which way to vote on those matters. If this is true, then it becomes blatantly obvious that this is just a scare tactic on their part, because the speech would be protected, and they are threatening to get it stopped anyway.

I think the better course is not to equate liberals with pro-abortionists as the article does not do so (save for the headline writer) and it forgets that there are any number of liberals who are pro-life.

I agree Rich, though I’ve tried to take advocacy paper like this for what their worth. I like Lifenews, but you have to see past the sensationalism.

I tend to be quite liberal when it comes a lot of issues.

Anti-Catholicism in America had just gone from bad to really worse.

The Church is the Shepherd of souls and within it’s rights to direct it’s members to turn away from sin… abortion is a sin, a most heinous crime against Almighty God…

St. Andrews? If so, he’s awesome. I got married there.

You know…I have this sinking suspicion that this group has not sent a single letter to more liberal leaning churches.

I certainly don’t remember hearing any uproar when these statements were made:
And to anyone who says that church is no place to talk about these issues, you tell them there is no place better – no place better," she said. “Because ultimately, these are not just political issues – they are moral issues.” - Michelle Obama Address to the African Methodist Episcopal Church
“The cardinals, the archbishops, the bishops that come to me and say, ‘We want you to pass immigration reform,’” disclosed Pelosi. “And I say, ‘But I want you to speak about it from the pulpit.’
“I want you to instruct your, whatever the communication is – the people, some of them, oppose immigration reform are sitting in those pews and you have to tell them that this is a ‘manifestation of our living the gospels,’” said Pelosi.

Do you have a link to, or know where she said that? I’m not challenging you, but woud like to have the source if any of my anti-church-participation-in-politics acquaintances brings it up.

Thanks.
