So my brother just asked me to be the Godfather for my two nieces. I’m so happy that they will finally be baptized and Catholic for that matter.

They will be baptized in the beginning of August. Their ages are 7 and 3.

I’m looking for a good gift for both of them, and I would like some suggestions. While I consider myself somewhat traditional, but brother is a lukewarm Catholic and his wife is a Methodist.

So I want to find the perfect gifts that are (1) traditional, (2) meaningful, and (3) will not cause my sister-in-law to second guess her decision to allow my brother to raise the kids Catholic.

Perhaps one day, my sister-in-law might join RCIA, but I don’t see that not happening anytime soon.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

God Bless!

There are many gifts you could give. Bible story books, children’s lives of the saints books, saint or bible DVDs, baptism commemorative photo frame, prayer plaque, a rosary, a crucifix, a saint medal.

I think you are overthinking this.

Thanks.

However, I guess I wasn’t clear enough. I know what kinds of gift categories are typical.

I actually more interested in specific recommendations. I.E. specific gift you would buy a 7 year old and 3 year old getting baptized.

My wife isn’t Catholic, so she not really a help here. So I’m hoping for some specific gift ideas that can bought online or found anywhere.

Thanks & God Bless

I would highly recommend purchasing a crucifix (or plain cross if you prefer) to hang on the child’s bedroom wall. Even more special (at least in my mind!) are the ones that are sold online (sometimes locally as well) that are made in the Holy Land from olive trees which grow there. I’ve bought a few, and the wood is gorgeous. Some of these even contain small pebbles or soil, olive leaves, etc., from the Holy Land, and you can then bring them to your favorite Priest to have them blessed if you wish! A note can also be enclosed with each to indicate that they’ve been specially blessed by Father _____________, along with any other kind of explanation about the Priest or loving remark you’d like to provide. A smaller one might be more appropriate for the 3-year-old with a slightly larger one for the 7-year-old ---- or two different types. Below is a link to some examples, but they’re sold at a few different sites with varying styles and prices, so it’s best to shop around:

On the very special Baptism day after the ceremony, you could sit down with the girls (or at least the older one!) and explain the origin of the wood as related to our Lord’s life in the Holy Land, etc., to make the entire experience of the day and her life as a Catholic and Christian even more meaningful.

Congratulations on being chosen as Godfather - sounds like you will be a great one! God’s blessings always.

I would get them each a savings bond and also arrange to have Masses said on the anniversary of their baptism.

The oldest is 7, this child is over the age of reason so will be receiving the big three Sacraments at once!

No, she won’t be. She’s being treated as an infant like her sister.

I was shocked to hear this, but the priest or dioceses apparently interprets the rule as 7 and under can be treated as an infant.

That was my concern as well. It could be very confusing for the older child, who has every right to have the opportunity to give her personal assent.

As godparent, you will be asked if you are prepared to help the parents bring up the children in the Catholic faith. That’s a biggie, especially under these circumstances. Age appropriate books and a commitment of time perhaps may be worked out with their parents consent. Prayers for you and the family. 🙏
