Hello all!

I’m in high school and looking for good (orthodox) Catholic college or university where I could study Theology and/or Philosophy before I join a religious order(hopefully the Dominicans!). I can’t find any ones with a religious or theological merit based scholarship, but I was wondering if anyone knew of one.

I’m currently looking at these schools, perhaps someone, especially alumni, could offer some advice:

-The Pontifical University of Thomas Aquinas
-Providence College
-Catholic University of America
-Notre Dame
-Assumption College

P.S. My GPA is upwards of 3.5, and I am a very devout traditionalist!

Just go to Ave Maria University in Flordia. They have the best weather. 😃

If you’re going to join an order, I’d highly recommend asking them what they would like. If I knew who I was going to marry and spend the rest of my life with, I most certainly would have pursued the degree that worked best for him.

These days your best bet is to find a way to go to college and not take on debt rather than learn something spectacular, especally if you plan to enter the order immediatly after.

Someone mentioned Ave Maria in Florida. Also for someone seeking a very traditionalist environment, Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia, or possibly Franciscan of Steubenville in Ohio. I also think there is a burgeoning college in Wyoming you might look into.

If you are looking for a Catholic College that affords you everything Catholic but not quite as “rigid” as those mentioned, St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa might be worth looking into. It is a college offered by the Benedictine Archabbey at Latrobe, the largest Benedicting monastery in the United States and the second largest Benedictine monastery in the world. It also offers a Seminary for seeking formation as Benedictines Monks and Brothers, in addition to diocesan priests of several dioceses. J.D degrees and Masters level and doctorates are available I believe. SVC offers everything Catholic on an everyday basis, and 100% of incoming freshman receive financial aid.
Might be of interest?

I thought those wanting to join a religious order or the priesthood had their tuition paid for them because they are seminarians. Also, from what I know in some places of the world you first have the discernment period in the monastery with the order and if they find your vocation is genuine they are the ones sending you of to study theology.

But I honestly don’t know.

If you are considering vocation, there is lack of vocation in Europe. So, if you want “broad horizons” perhaps it is a possibility to be accepted as a seminarian in Europe, at least here I’m sure the tuition is supported in full by the church.

Northeast Catholic College in New Hampshire offers full scholarships to those who end up becoming religious. They are small (only about 100 students) but a good, solid, liberal arts, Catholic college.

If you’re going to join an order, I’d highly recommend asking them what they would like.
This is very good advice. Even if you are not positive which order you are interested in, start reaching out to a few orders on your short list and see what they have to say about it. Different orders have different requirements.

Indeed. TSome Franciscans will want to send you to THEIR college.
