I’m not sure where this thread belongs, so moderators, please move it for me if it’s in the wrong spot.

I’m looking for some information on men’s religious orders-- specifically REALLY ORTHODOX religious orders. They can be traditional (Tridentine rite) or modern (like CFR), but they MUST be orthodox! So, does anyone know what orders I might look into that fit this description?

Thanks in advance!

The only one that I am familiar with is the Conventual Franciscan Friars. They run the church that I belong to and they are wonderful! They also don’t have a shortage of young men coming into the priesthood. Another one that I have heard of, though less familiar, is the Norbertine order. My SIL and her husband help them out a lot in their monastary in the mountains about three hours from my house. I think that all orders will have problem areas. There is a Benedictan monastary in my area which I have heard is a bit out there (though I can’t confirm this personally). You just have to ‘shop around’ to find one that is orthodox. I would see if a particular order has a retreat, I sure that this would give you a good idea of how orthodox the order is.

Dear UKcatholicGuy…would you want me to include your name on the list of vocations that we pray for perpetually along with all of our priests and seminarians? The thread is in my signature below…you can have a look! God bless you and protect you…

I won’t turn down an offer for prayer 🙂 Thanks, Shoshana!

I’m also in Louisville. There are two Conventual Franciscan parishes here, plus Mount St. Francis in Indiana. I’ll be joining St. Anthony’s when I come into the Church at Easter Vigil, and beginning discernment for the priesthood after that. Having been through the RCIA class and gone on a retreat at Mount St. Francis, the Conventuals seem as orthodox as you could expect them to be. There is also a Dominican parish in on 6th Street in Old Louisville. I’ve attended Mass there a couple of times, so I’m not familiar with them, but I don’t have any reason to think they are not orthodox.

I’ll also second the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal… they’re pretty awesome! Some of them were at the Youth 2000 retreat in Covington back in November.

Dear Louisville…would you like your name added to the list also as UKcatholicGuy? 🙂

On thing to watch for is Province/monestary variations which make a particular group more or less faithful to Rome than the order in general. Check it out carefully. Some disloyal groups hide in a more loyal larger group, so be observant.

One you may be intereseted in is “Opus Dei” If Dan Brown is against it… it can’t be all bad! 😃

Just Googled thier website!

I believe this is the most traditional group that is not in schism and has a Papal blessing.

Greetings,
Technically, Opus Dei is not a religious order, it is a personal prelature. Supernumeraries live a communal life, but not like in a monastery. There is an order (?) associated with Opus Dei called the Sacerdotal Order of the Holy Cross. This may or may not be the kind of life you are being called to. They are orthodox 👍

Oh, and they don’t have monks, albino or otherwise.

What exactly are you looking for is the main question. Contemplative orders, preaching orders, teaching orders, hermits, what? There are many orders, each having their rules, aims, goals etc. You need to have some idea of what your own goal spiritually is.

Everybody is assuming that this guy is interested in an active order. The most conservative (but not schismatically “traditional”) orders are monastic. Some of them, such as the Benedictine congregation of Solesmes, which now has an American foundation, are bastions of Catholic conservatism.

I believe it is a fallacy to assume tht most even active orders are not thoroughly orthodox. The image of the barefoot Jesuit in street clothes breaking break around a dinner table and calling it a Mass seems to be becoming a thing of the past.

If you are in Kentucky, please consider the Diocese of Covington. We have a very good bishop, Roger Foys.
