Hi,

I’m looking to buy my non-Catholic sister a book for Christmas. She is currently in the Lutheran Church. She loves to read and I want to buy here a good Catholic book that’s not too “scary” if you know what I mean. I was thinking maybe Raymond Arroyo’s book on Mother Angelica…or possibly something geared towards women, like something by Johnette Benkovic. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Those are all good ideas (I’ve read Raymond Arroyo’s book, it’s good). Another suggestion is a book on the life of Elisabeth Leseur (I ordered it for a friend of mine through Sophia Press–I can’t remember the exact title, but her name is in the title). A fundamentalist woman I knew read that book and was impressed by it.

Another one is “Story of a Soul” by St. Therese of Lisieux

I’ve just finished Jonette’s book Full of Grace and I loved it. I think that would definitely be appropriate.

These are not Catholic, but Liz Curtis Higgs wrote Bad Girls of the Bible and Really Bad Girls of the Bible. Sounds awful, but it’s pretty cool. She takes the stories of “bad” girls (Eve, Lot’s Wife, Jezebel, etc.) and first she creates a modern version of the story and then goes back to the Biblical story and talks about what we can learn from the mistakes made. I have read them several times, and although they use Protestant versions of the Bible for reference, there is no anti-Catholicism present.

God bless,

Trish

All good suggestions so far. The life of a well known Saint or Catholic personality would be good (Mother Angelica or St. Teresa of Calcutta) although you should check out any of a historical person to see if the focus a lot on physical penance which might really freak your sister.

A good time frame to focus on might be around the time of the reformation to subtly show her that not all Catholics were losers then! lol Teresa of Avilla might be a good one.

The fictonal books about Fr. Elijah are great also. From a review–“Michael O’Brien presents a thrilling apocalyptic novel about the condition of the Roman Catholic Church at the end of time.”

Of course books by any of the great Catholic authors would also be wonderful–and maybe a bit more subtle. Flannery O’Conner, Walker Percy, Chesterton, etc.

Sounds like a great gift idea! I may use it too!

There are non-Catholic Christians who count two Catholic “classics” among the most inspiring books to read -

Interior Castles by Teresa of Avilla
Imitation of Christ by Thomas a’Kemipis

Of course, IMHO, one can never go wrong with C. S. Lewis. A while back, I found a “Mere Christianity” Journal - it made a nice gift. My Lutheran neighbor LOVES Lewis, she has my copy of his “Reflections on the Psalms” now.

I haven’t read it, but someone once told me that I should give it to my hubby to read. he’s protestent. it’s called “A Phillidelphia Catholic in King Arthor’s Court” I believe it’s a story about a boy who’s family died and he went to go live with his protestent relatives. don’t know much else about it, but it’s worth looking in to. the person who reccomended it to me said it was a great book.

I think the book on MOther Angelica would be a great gift. that is a really cool book!

If she likes fiction, you might try Pierced by a Sword, Conceived Without Sin, and House of Gold. Since they are free, you could get them along with something else.
