What does “love covers of mutlitude of sins” mean? Does this have naything to do with expiating our sins through penance? Are there any other related Bible verses?
Context and the intention of the author are the first things to consider when discerning the meaning of any biblical verse or phrase.
The whole verse is:
1 Peter 4:8 Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.
Peter is discussing our Christian love for one another, not the redemption Christ gained for us on the cross, although it is related to the love of Christ, of course.
If we love one another, we forgive the trespasses of the other. If we forgive the trespasses of another, Jesus said we will be forgiven for our trespasses–Lord’s Prayer. i would figure trespasses mean sins.–nicolo
I believe this passage also refers to the capacity of some one to forgive the venial sin of another through sincere prayer and love for both the sinner and God.
