HerChurch.

We are a diverse community, standing firmly within the Christian tradition in order to re-image the divine by claiming her feminine persona in thealogy, liturgy, church structure, art, language, practices, leadership, and acts of justice. Challenging the church’s restricted language of the past, we pay special attention to images and metaphors that attempt to embrace divine fullness and that offer a witness of holy nurture and inclusive justice, both to the church and to the world.

Our Christian/Lutheran feminist prayers and liturgy reach back into the storehouse of tradition to bring forth names as Mother, Shaddai, Sophia, Womb, Midwife, Shekinah, She Who Is. They do so out of renewed insights into the nature of the Gospel!

Let your relationship with the Divine be opened and expanded.

Mater Nostra:]

Our Mother who is within us
we celebrate your many names.
Your wisdom come
your will be done
unfolding from the depths within us.
Each day you give us all that we need.
You remind us of our limits
and we let go.
You support us in our power
and we act with courage.
For you are the dwelling place within us
the empowerment around us
and the celebration among us
now and for ever. Amen

This is absolutely and totally OFFENSIVE!

They have taken the Our Father and turned it into the Our Mother and the Hail Mary into Hail Goddess!!! They’ve turned our precious Rosary into the Goddess Rosary - Oh My GOD, help us, help them!
This is pagan worship at it’s finest! And they claim to be Christian. I didn’t see one word mentioning Christ!

How can people be so deluded!

I am nearly sick by such a thing. However, it seems befitting after all a headquarters in California… 😉 Christians everywhere should be in prayer that this blasphemy will no longer wage war against our precious God. NOT goddess.

Martin Luther:

"If the world last long it will be again necessary, on account of the different interpretations of Scripture which now exist, that to preserve the unity of faith we should receive the Councils and decrees and fly to them for refuge
." (Contra Zuingli et Oecol. cited in “Sola Scriptura: A Blueprint For Anarchy” by Patrick Madrid)

So… um… yeah…

This isn’t just heretical. It isn’t just offensive. This is really screwed up. This “church” is a collision of Lutheran Christianity and Wicca. It’s not even an amalgamation or a casual “ripping off.” It’s a complete collision. A collision made by feminist Christians, mind you. The Wiccans would never attempt something like this.

I can see the idea that our perception of God is very masculine oriented. But taking the feminine parts of Christianity and rescripting them to acknowledge a female-aspect of God is just bizarre. Why have a “goddess” rosary? Why not just pray the regular rosary? After all, the prayers of the rosary are aimed at the most imporant female in Christianity.

Wow… I just don’t know what else to say. My otherwise glib and logical mind is just reeling with confusion from this.

Like the Good Book says, there is nothing new under the sun.

NewAge, pagan, combines with Christianity and then results in some sort of Gnostic amalgamation cult. Happened many times before and there is no reason to think that it will stop happening until the Lord comes again.

Folks like this pose no serious threat to Holy Mother Church or even to traditional protestant Christianity and thus I would say it is best to just ignore them.

So, what exactly is the purpose of this post? Is it for discussion or simply to advertise? Is its purpose to infuriate those who cling to historical Christianity? Is it some sort of DaVinci code prophet tool? Why would anybody feel it appropriate to put this highly offensive material on a Christian forum, and then call it true Christianity? And further, is this person willing to discuss this horrible heresy?

{edit} okay, after reading the site I realize that ahimsa is not necessarily claiming this as his/her own church, but just sharing the link to it. I still find it appauling, however. {edit}

I beg to differ. People like this are a very real threat to the church. Because of people such as the Synodical Bishop and the Presiding Bishop who will not exercise their authority to end this heresy, apostacy and outright pagan defilement of sacred space.

As a Lutheran, I find HerChurch to be way outside of traditional Lutheran beliefs and teachings. I wouldn’t even call it Lutheran, even though the congregation comes under the umbrella of the ELCA.

I’m certain that Martin Luther, were he here today, would serve up some scathing criticism of what HerChurch does and has done. I appreciate the Luther quote that Dave posted above. We may be closer to that that one might think. HerChurch makes Zwingli look postively orthodox.:hmmm:

Peace,
Pastor Gary

why is it so offenseive to have god be a female? when has it said that god is only a male…i thought god had no distinct form, so god could be a female “goddess” i see nothing wrong with it

oh and its not just wiccans who reconize goddess and god

God revealed Himself in these final days as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. While God does not really have a “gender”, He chose this way of speaking to reveal Himself.

In a way, God the Son does have a form as Jesus Christ who is the God-Man. Since God is indivisible and it is utterly impossible to consider God the Son wholly apart from God the Father and God the Holy Spirit (because they are One) we can say that God does have a body but not in the way the Manichees or Gnostics would think of the “god” of the OT.

I’m not sure what you mean. Would you mind elaborating on this?

And that’s no small feat. 😃
Ahimsa, may I ask why did you start this thread?

  :nope: :tsktsk: :bigyikes:

this is just evil… evil… the Devil’s handy work…

It sounds like a 40th birthday party gone bad. You know when they put in other words to a song for the birthday girl, except this just happens to be from an evil source. They need our prayers.

Ahimsa, may I ask why did you start this thread?
Do you think “HerChurch” has something beneficial to say to traditional Christians, even if HerChurch might be heretical in some (or many!) ways? If you were to meet someone from HerChurch, what sort of conversation do you think you two would be able to have?

hahaha I posted a thread about this. I think there were three before me too.

Sigh.

Their website has an explanation which makes sense, that God is beyond gender, and yet inclusive of both genders. It lists some biblical images of God as feminine:
As a woman giving birth, a Nursing Mother, one with maternal activities and even breasts, a midwife, the shekinah, the female homemaker, bakerwoman, Ezer, Sophia (the feminine personification of wisdom).

I would worry about setting off strong emotions which would poison the conversation. But the feminine images of God would be interesting to discuss in the context of the Church, both in the present and in history.

Their website suggests that mainstream Christianity is too patriarchal and the masculine image of God overstressed, but I wonder if they aren’t going to the opposite extreme rather than seeking the middle? And I wonder why they feel a need to reach out to pagan religious traditions and if this doesn’t compromise their mission.

I think a conversation with someone from HerChurch would be challenging. I’m not sure that I could engage the topics as well as I would like.
