I’m a conservative Roman Catholic man. Is it OK to marry my proabortionist Latvian Orthodox girlfriend? We get on on all other subjects…

I would not marry someone with whom I did not share the most basic beliefs.

To define your girlfriend as “proabortionist” is rather incendiary language. It applies to a small subset of the pro-choice people, those who actively encourage abortion.

The Russian Orthodox Church is clear on their teaching wrt abortion:

I would be very concerned about marrying someone who believes that killing babies is an acceptable behavior for whatever reason. What if she became pregnant with your child and decided she didn’t want to have the baby? This belief is likely to be connected to her beliefs on contraception as well. Having more in depth conversations about this is very important. If you set up a meeting with a priest, it should clarify this issue further.

This is something to talk about in your meetings with your priest.

There is a lot to unpack here.

First she’s Orthodox so you would need to marry in the Orthodox Church after proper premarital prep in the Catholic Church (and likely the Orthodox Church as well). You would have all of the issues surrounding your mass obligation and her worship at Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Also serious hurdles on how children are to be raised— Catholic or Orthodox. Also the Orthodox have differing beliefs on many things.

And, a woman who is pro-abortion is probably not a good candidate for the mother of your children and passing on the faith to them. The Orthodox are not pro abortion so she is at odds with her own Church here.

I suggest you sit down with your priest.
