I hae read that Melchizadek may have been Shem, the son of Noah. But I find this confusing when I read in Hebrews 7 that Melchizadek has no ancestry. What am I missing here?

source for your first statement? no point in discussing it without a source.

From what I understand it comes from Jewish Midrash, although I don’t know which source.

Hi puzzleannie,

This would be one source —

link still gives no source for the quote, prof. Hahn has written many books, so we are still looking for a source.

Look at Hahn’s “A Father Who Keeps His Promises”. Hahn wrote it in that book. I think he cited the Jewish Midrash. I’ll look later if no one finds it.

Here’s one reference, from an ancient document called the Book of the Bee. The identification of Melchizedek with Shem is discussed in detail in a number of commentaries on Hebrews; what I’m looking at right now is pp 158-171 of Vol. 47A of the Word Biblical Commentary (author William L. Lane)

As for Melchizedek’s not having a mother and father, the writer of Hebrews is referring to the lack of documented parents as being a type of Christ. This (argument from ignorance) is now considered to be a logical fallacy, but in the days of the 1st century rabbis, argument from ignorance was commonly used. This is also discussed in the relevant sections of many commentaries on Hebrews.
