I am a bagpiper who occasionally plays pipes in church for special events such as weddings. A “glengarry” hat is a standard part of my piping uniform. Am I permitted to wear this in church while playing the pipes?

Dear pater,

Now why would a man not wear a hat in a Catholic church? It would be for the reason of showing respect to God. In the Catholic Church we have a history of lay men not wearing their hats in church for this reason. In a world where so little attention is given to signs of respect, what a valuable sign it would be for you to bare your head in church as an acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty and goodness!
