IMHO To compromise is to not follow the Holy Mother Church. It is wrong for all parties.

I wouldn’t trust that website, put your trust where it belongs. This article doesn’t speak for the Chinese bishops.

You should try and read this.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

It will always remain that no person be licitly ordained a bishop or have authority in a See without the Pope’s approval.

That does not mean that bishops will be appointed over the objections of the local goverment.

The Church has made such arrangements in the past and operates with such aggreements now.

A prime example is the Archdiocese of the Military. To head that Archdiocese requires one to be of Colonel or most likely General rank. Which means that the Vatican is not going to appoint someone that the DoD and Congress is not going to give that rank to.

It would severly restrict that Bishop’s ability to pastor his flock.

The Vatican is very much interested in having an effective bishop, both at the Pentegon and in Bejing.

So it would only appoint those who it feels can work effectively, and sometimes, that means discussion and compromise

Read any history of the Church and you will see that the issues concerning the rights of the civil authorities over the Church have taken a variety of forms over the years. Certainly there is a great risk of scandal by entering into an agreement with the Communists. Would any agreement advance the mission of the Church? I don’t know. I just pray that whatever is done/or not done is for the greater glory of God - and not some other reason.

In this case it would be Holy Mother Church doing the compromising, not someone failing to follow the Church.

You would think that Communist governments would have figured that trap out by now after the time the Polish Communists picked Karol Wojtyla from the bottom of a LONG list of names submitted by the Vatican.

43 years after the Polish Authorities made the mistake of choosing Karol Wojtyla as auxiliary Bishop of Krakow, Pope John Paul II finished helping to bring about the fall of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union.

Let the Red Chinese pick from a list - They’ll be signing the death warrant for the People’s Republic of China and for totalitarian rule in China. They’ll never know what hit them.

I think ending Communist Totalitarianism in China would definitely add to the glory of God.

In Christ, Michael

No, it doesn’t speak for the Chinese bishops. Neither does the link you provided. Instead, both sources let the Chinese cardinal speak for himself. Is there any reason to question what the cardinal said? It seems in line with what the Vatican has been saying or hinting for several years now.

“Ending Communist Totalitarianism in China would definitely add to the glory of God.” I don’t think you’ll get an argument with that.

You may well be right that this is the way to proceed, too.
