New Hermit for the Diocese of Arlington, VA

I practice reclusion for religious reasons, but only because God led me in that direction. I’ve been a Lay Dominican for close to 30 years now. I have a special needs son with high-functioning autism He’s reclusive too, but I wish he would do more prayers and less computer. It’s been difficult placing him in a job, too. We both pray the chaplet of Divine Mercy and the rosary during the 3pm hour. Albeit separately because he prays in English, and I pray in Latin, with a longer rosary.

I’m the kind of person who for most of my life has had no trouble envisioning myself floating around alone in a space capsule or living alone in a hut at the Antarctic doing research. Many days this has even sounded rather pleasant. I figure I’d make a great hermit. I liked reading about St. Simon Stock as a child. But God hasn’t led me in that direction. At least not yet.

I think you’ll enjoy this…

Hermits were the first philanthopists, opening hospitals for the sick poor who showed up on their doorstep.

The reformer of the Poor Clares, St. Colette, was an anchoress in her hometown of Corbie, France. The scars of her anchorhold are still visible on the church there, as well as her bricked-in “squint.”

Stylites can still happen today, although their towers would be replaced by apartment towers. They could be very helpful, spiritually speaking, for inner cities.
