No Americans among fourteen new cardinals

I don’t think anyone expected there to be any Americans (assuming you mean U.S.) bishops named as Cardinals. He has already picked several U.S. bishops as Cardinals and there aren’t really any more bishops that would stand out as obvious candidates that Pope Francis would realistically select. The only one of these that I am familiar with is Archbishop Luis Ladaria who is head of the CDF and was expected to be named as a Cardinal.

Interesting that the Almoner was elevated. Does he only look after charities in the diocese of Rome or is his scope broader?

I think LA and Philly need to accept that they won’t get cardinals during this papacy ;).

Archbishop Becciu was the Pope’s delegate to the Knights of Malta. I guess he must have done a good job.

The guy who rendered the position of Cardinal Patron redundant? It was an odd situation.

The universality of the church does not reside in its apparent variety like some secular organization but in the universality of the truth she proclaims as bride of Christ. Of course during this troubled times bishops from troubled zones (like Middle East and Africa on the war zone and Spain and Italy on the cultural war-zone happening in EU) stand out because they have a lot of challenges.

The continuing insult of Archbishop Chaput in particular is more pronounced with every new consistory.
I don’t think it needs to be viewed as a deliberate slight against Chaput personally (or Gomez). Pope Francis has clearly set out his goal to make the college of cardinals more international than ever before. In truth, the U.S. has been rather over-represented in recent years. So it makes sense that we are seeing fewer red hats.

I’d venture to guess that Chaput isn’t losing sleep over it or feeling angry about it. So I’m not going to either.

I would believe your reasoning, Joe_5859, except that he named Cupich, Tobin, and Ferrell as cardinals in a prior consistory.

As Joe pointed out, the US (and Europe) have been overrepresented among the cardinals. The Pope is rebalancing things.

Philadelphia and LA have living cardinals (even if Rigali has moved). It’s not unusual at all to refrain from naming a new cardinal in that instance.

Rigali and Mahony are both over 80, so they are not si significant anymore. Though Scola in Milan is probably a reason the current archbishop there did not get a red hat.

Becciu is interesting. Paul VI, when he was sostituto for Pius XII, turned down the cardinal’s hat. As Sec of State’s 2nd in command, it sets up some interesting dynamics.

No. Previous Popes would sometimes wait until the Cardinal archbishop Emeritus would turn 80. That ship has sailed and yet Chaput and Gomez have been passed over again. I suspect they will not get red hats under the current papacy.

I didn’t say it was required, but not unheard of. Maida/Vigneron pops to mind.

I agree, however, that Chaput and Gomez are likely to be passed over until another pope. Or they age out.

Yeah I think one of us on this forum have a better chance of becoming a Cardinal than those two under Pope Francis.

As I noted earlier, the pope did not think selecting Cupich, Tobin, and Ferrell as cardinals in a prior consistory was out of balance.
