I find it very strange that there is no Catholic radio in the NYC area. There are at least 3 protestant stations that I know of. I’m talking about regular, free radio, not short wave, internet feed or satellite.

Why is that? I know that this is an expensive market but we sure need it.

As someone who lives in one of the surrounding areas of Loa Angeles, I concur. We don’t have Catholic Radio either. We USED to up until about 3 years ago. This town definitely needs it!!
We have DJ’s on some of the local talk/rock stations who usually speak in error when talking about the Church. Some claim to be “Catholic”, but in light of the recent Church scandal, they always seem to jump ship and begin to besmirch instead of defend.

Thanks, Marie, but those stations are several hundred miles from New York City.

Hi Gang,

I join you in wishing there were Catholic radio in New York City and Los Angeles (again!), and EVERYWHERE in between 😛

It’s only a matter of time, I suppose, but in the case of larger, more expensive markets (can anyone say New York and Los Angeles?), it’s likely going to take a while longer than it will elsewhere.

What can you do in the meantime? PRAY for Catholic radio to come to your area. And listen on the Internet. Our shows are on catholic.com. And there are several networks (EWTN, Ave Maria Radio, Relevant Radio) and stations (too many to mention) that stream their programming on the web.

Plus, as I recently did, you can subscribe to Sirius Satellite Radio, which now carries EWTN 24/7.

God bless!

Two years ago I moved from Omaha (metro population ~ 1 million) which has a Catholic radio station to Denver (metro population over 3 million, I think) which does not. I was shocked. THe good news is that one is in the works, and the latest news is that it is getting ‘close,’ though I can’t define exactly what that means.

The station in Omaha emerged on the scene four or five years ago, and the process was much like what is now happening in Denver. A few dedicated people start praying and looking for whatever assistance anyone can provide (e.g. prayers, familiarity with radio, MONEY). The Denver group is especially blessed to have Fr. Antoine from EWTN as its spiritual director. When things are in place (mostly the MONEY), they look for an existing station to come on the market and make an offer. The blessings that I saw in Omaha were fantastic!! Catholics and non-Catholics alike benefitted from the local programming as well as the feeds from EWTN. I especially enjoyed listening to the Mass from Mr. Angelica’s on my way to work in the morning.

Unfortunately, the only support I have been able to provide in Denver is the prayer variety. As I said above, though, the news is that we are getting close. I will keep NY and LA in my prayers also, and may God bless your efforts!

I suggest making it known to the local diocese that there is such a demand. They would be able to plant the seed money to get the project up and running, and would be willing if they believed that the local Catholics will support it.

Prayer is very important as it is with everything, but it can’t hurt to let the bishop know!

Until then, Radio Shack has a couple of relatively inexpensive shortwave radios. I have their cheapest one. Sometimes I can’t get the station in, but most of the time I can, sometimes with background noise. Having an extra antenna helps. (I use a piece of wire clipped to the built-in antenna).
I can’t imagine what I would do now without my shortwave radio and WEWN.

You would think that in such large markets as NYC and LA that they would be able to make a go of it. I live near Detroit and there are two Catholic radio stations in that market, and both of them are very good.

Possible good news…
Just today I learned that a radio station here in Cleveland will be signing off from their AM music format.

Whether this is where a new catholic radio station will be located, I do not know. On Monday July 12 at midnight, I may be listening to find out what the new format will be. Could it be our Catholic Radio station? Stay tuned!

go with God!
