Hi - I am a Christian, and I’ve been baptised in the Christian faith, but I am considering converting to Catholicism. I need to make confession. I have to talk to a priest as soon as possible. Will they take my confession?

I may be wrong, but I think a non-Catholic can only go to confession if their life is in danger. You may, by all means, make an appt. with a priest to talk to him but I don’t think he could give you absolution for your sins. I know someone will come along who knows for sure.

i know that you wanted to make a confession but i know that a preist will not allow you to undergo the sacrament. Sacrament of Confession is not just a confession of sin but it is also a sacrament of reconciliation. You must be a Catholic to be able to undergo the sacrament. You can talk to a priest but i doubt that it will be under the sacrament.

The same question was asked in Ask An Apologist and this was Jim Blackburn’s reply:

Code of Canon Law (844 §4) makes provision for this in limited circumstances:

Quote:
If the danger of death is present or if, in the judgment of the diocesan bishop or conference of bishops, some other grave necessity urges it, Catholic ministers administer [the sacraments of penance, Eucharist, and anointing of the sick] licitly also to other Christians not having full communion with the Catholic Church, who cannot approach a minister of their own community and who seek such on their own accord, provided that they manifest Catholic faith in respect to these sacraments and are properly disposed.
UNQUOTE

If you are preparing to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church you will also be prepared for your first confession as part of that process. Go and see a priest today, tell him your dilemma, and what has been moving you to consider the Catholic faith. He will direct you from there. It is best to call the office of your closest Catholic Church and ask for an appointment with the priest to discuss a serious pastoral concern.

Most Catholic priests would be happy to sit down with you and talk much like Confession. However before anyone can receive a Sacrament in the Catholic Church they must receive Catechesis on the Sacrament and understand the Sacrament from a Catholic view. The fact that you are Baptized would allow you to receive the Sacrament under special serious circumstances and that would be up to the priest to decide.

Thank you all that was very helpful. I will schedule an appointment today, there’s a church right down the block. Something keeps drawing me to the Catholic Church and I can’t explain it. God, maybe? NOTE to Thistle: I did review the post about about ‘Non-baptised’ people making confessions but felt it was not relevevant to me, as I have been baptised. Thank you.
