too many thoughts associated with this to articulate. I need to sign off.

The way I learned this sentiment from Pascal is “All of the troubles of life come upon us because we refuse to sit quietly for a while each day in our rooms.” Either way it is expressed I agree with it. Many of our problems in my view come from reacting without thinking, without meditating. I’ve become quite fond of sitting with the eyes closed, the body still, and awareness on the breath as a way to recharge. Often something will come to me while doing this that hadn’t occurred before that may help with an issue. As mother Teresa said " Silence gives us a new outlook on everything."

This is truer now than ever before. We are bombarded constantly by the media and our pocket media toys with thoughts that are not our own. We become enslaved by the thoughts of others and increasingly are not able to think for ourselves. The robotic thinking habits of the young today do not auger well for the future.

Good thoughts.
I constantly look for ways to fill the day, and those things might be good pursuits, but not as “fillers”.
For me to live the Christian life I must get into some quiet time alone with God (so it’s not really alone…)

If I go about filling life with stuff, it goes off the rails.

I think Pascal is taking about what the Eastern Fathers call nepsis, which roughly translates as mindfulness.

Can I ask for the context in which Pascel wrote the quotation?

Christi pax,

Lucretius
