I’ll admit that a guilty pleasure of mine is watching the ocassional “John Hagee Today” (or whatever it’s called) and being amused with the Pastor’s highly theatrical style and I even agree with his common sense approach and attitudes to today’s societal evils, but when he starts going on his anti-Catholic rants and the whole “Whore of Babylon”/“Jerusalem Countdown” schtick, I turn him off. Anyone watch or is anyone here a member of his Cornerstone Church? What is the extent of Hagee’s anti-Catholicism?
 
Well, I was raised as Assemblies of God in my earlier childhood, most of my family is still AoG. And I would, until the last year or so, indulge in watching his program from time to time. The theatrics was something I was used to, so that didn’t phase me at all. But the anti-Catholicism is par for the course with that denomination. Now, not to say that every person that belongs to AoG is as blatant or un-loving or hardcore as he is.

But, now that I am becoming Catholic, I have no tolerance for sitting through one of his messages, for so many theological reasons. I actually get queasy when I hear him, I know the arrogance and hatred that drives most of it. I feel bad for those in my family still caught up in all of that.
 
I used to watch him when I was a Baptist. I never noticed any particular anti-Catholicism, but at that time Catholicism wasn’t on my radar screen.

However, I quit watching him after I caught him in a bald-faced lie. He was doing a series on Islam, and to illustrate the hatred certain Islamic groups have for Christianity and the West, he used video clips from Friday sermons that he said had been captured by cameras smuggled into mosques for during the Friday prayer services. However, in reality these clips had simply been taped from prayer services televised on Arabic TV networks, whose logos were clearly visible in the bottom corners of the screen. After that, I had no more respect for the man.

And to be fair, it is not as though every time he preaches, it is about Catholicism as the Whore of Babylon. He has certain series in which he continues his messages on a particular theme from week to week, and sometimes during some of these series he berates Catholicism in this way. But when he does, he doesn’t leave any doubt as to what his thoughts are on the matter! :eek:

Unfortunately, most of the average church goers sitting in the pews are not what you would call critical thinkers, they tend to believe anything coming from the pulpit as “gospel” truth. You won’t find many of them bothering to dig a little deeper outside what is written by their own kind.

But, by God’s grace, there are some exceptions! 😃
 
There are many posts on these forums and on other internet sites that attack or attempt to discredit the Church. It can wear on you after a while.
But it lifts my spirits when I see individuals like you (Jeanette, Dave, Steve) who are coming back to the Church or have made that leap of faith and are entering into the Church. I give thanks and praise to God for all of you and remember you in my prayers. May the Lord grant you abundant blessings.
 
Thank you Banjo! I am thankful also, even in the midst of the hardship of converting, there is a joy that passes all understanding! So the abundant blessings are happening already!

Have watched his shows on TBN occasionally as well. He just comes across to me as the type of Southern guy who , back in the day, might have been a Klan grand dragon kind of guy, or whatever, kind of like a DC Stephenson type of character ( read the book “Notre Dame vs. The Klan” for more, if interested). He’s a showman, first and foremost I think. He breathes some fire up there in his pulpit though. I’m not saying he’s actually a racist or whatever, I don’t know the man of course, but there is a certain “strand” at least in his thinking it seems which would have appealed to what they used to call here “American Nativism”, which was basically White Anglo-Saxon Protestants who disliked and / or at least held a deep inherent “distrust” towards anyone, anyone or any immigrant for instance (be they from someplace else in Europe, or elsewhere in the world) , who was not “W.A.S.P.” and of “old American stock” like them. Of course they were very much anti-Catholic, those types. That’s the kind of guy Hagee strikes me as. He’s no Jack Chick, but I would say when I’ve watched him he comes off as anti-Catholic. Last time I saw one of his shows he had a big billboard behind him on his stage which had a drawing or painting maybe of what was clearly supposed to be an altar boy and a rather sinister looking caricature of a priest, or actually bishop I’d say, who was adorned with a large gold cross around his neck. The tagline above it was , "BEWARE OF FALSE CHRISTIANITY! Paganism Parades as Christianity ! " So… what’s that say to anyone who’s a Catholic and sees such things, being preached to an arena full of pretty attentive looking listeners?? Doesn’t sound very good does it, even if one’s a non-observant Catholic or an “INO” or “cultural Catholic” only, or what-have-you. Strange to say it this way, but it can kind of give you some vague idea of how Jewish people, again whether “observant” or not, must sometimes feel when exposed to religious prejudice I suppose. It’s a shame , now that we’re in the 21st century, that guys like Hagee can pack an arena like that. Clearly , anti-Catholicism is not just some thing of the distant American past, IMHO at least…

Now if you want to talk about theatrics, that guy puts out more drama than Shakespeare. I watch him and I dont feel like I’m watching a worship service at all, I feel like I’m watching some kind of stage show or the center ring of a three ring circus.

My father watches him and Benny Hinn! I can’t be in the same room when Parson is on, I just can’t handle anyone like that anymore. Father Corapi is about my speed now, I love him (and some Catholics think he is extreme!).

I have to laugh at how my life has completely changed over the last few years. I would never have believed that my favorite shows would end up being Fr. Corapi’s Catechism Series, Fr. Groeschel and The Journey Home! 🙂
 
Great post! I have an article on American Nativism in the Kent State University Press publication, Civil War History. I’ll have to read it again tonight.

I thought I read somewhere here at CA that Hagee was once Catholic. Was he?

I used to watch him just because he was wonderfully and courageously pro-life. Lately the Devil has convinced him to put pro-life way down the list of values and has substituted a focus on the Holy Land and the Book of Revelations. Amazing what the Devil will do to try to keep killing babies. I pray that he comes back to the never ending, never yielding, never diverted, never second cause of defending Jesus himself in the soul of an unborn baby.
 
Hi everybody! This is my very first post and I just had to make this thread my first. I too watch Jon Hagee almost every day. He is most entertaining. However I would only recommend watching him and others like him ( Rod Parsley, Benny Hinn, Ken Copeland, etc.) if one is secure in their own faith.
Anyway he is extremely anti-catho;ic! He feels that we corrupted the true faith pretty much from the cruxifiction. He believes strongly in the Rapture and that Catholics will be standing around wondering what happened and that the Pope is in fact in league with Satan and will be the Anti-Christ.
Other than those drawbacks he is very entertaining and I too agree with some of positions.

I agree,

Pastor Hagee is very much in the Tim LaHaye school of Premillennialism, and models his preaching style after Jimmy Swaggert. He is known to be very anti-Catholic and is one of the more Fundamentalist preachers associated with TBN, though he rarely spouts off against things specifically Catholic on the air.

Though I wouldn’t get too heavily into watching guys like these, but its nice to know where they are coming from. It would be alot better getting your daily fill of EWTN or Catholic Answers, more theologically sound for sure.

Actually, this is the second time you posted your first. And I replied to your first above. But anyway welcome to the forum.😉
 
If memory serves I think John Hagee twice
predicted actual days and times of Jesus
return. One time it was written in one of
his books, if I remember… back in the late
80’s or early 90’s.

He and Benny Hinn make me crazy to watch. I
cannot believe their theatrics and how they abuse
the charisma that they’ve been gifted with.

They remind me of the “super apostles” that
showed up in Corinth during Paul’s time. These
folks were making lots of money preaching the
gospel and were puffing themselves up, rather
than living selfless, modest lives.

Paul, who had matured quite a bit by then, said an
amazing thing, concerning these people. “At least
they are preaching the gospel.”

That statement really helped me becauise I was
becoming bitter about folks like that… Paul’s
words checked my spirit… They reminded me
that the messenger is not as important as the
message and that the Word of God, the Gospel,
is the power of God unto salvation.

So… I don’t whine about these guys like I used
to. If I come across someone who watches Hinn
or Hagee or whoever, I try to fellowship with them
about Jesus Christ and the Word.

Recalling my early days as a renewed Catholic,
back in the 1970’s, I used to watch Oral Roberts
often and received much encouragement from
his show. His messages caused me to read the
scriptures often to check out what he was
preaching about.

Finally…

In Acts 17 there is a passage, written by Luke,
which should be the standard for all seekers and
followers of Christ…

Paul and Silas had just arrived in Berea, having
come from Thessalonia. They were teaching in
the synagogues there. Luke said, “The Bereans
were more noble minded than the Thessalonians
for they received Paul’s teaching eagerly, but,
they studied the scripture (OT) daily to make
sure he was teaching them the truth.”

Have a grace filled day filled with heavenly fruit,
