Please a TRUCE on the Lingerie War

Has anyone had the same experience?

When one is in church and find oneself incapable of looking to the left or the right without seeing some teenage girl’s underwear sticking out of the back of her pants.

I keep expecting lightning to strike either me for seeing it, the girls for having no respect, or their fathers or mothers for having no sense. I don’t think there are more than a handful of young women in my church – which is pretty conservative – who have not at one time or another exposed most of the congregation to their lingerie. This is troubling.

So I’m asking for a truce. Women, I promise to be more attentive to your hair, your sparkling wit, or whatever it is about you that leads to such embarrassing displays, if you promise to quit showing me your underwear, your belly-button rhinestones, and your love handles.
 
Yeppers, we have this problem to at my parish…last summer one women wore a halter top…I sat a few rows behind her, and she looked naked from the back…:bigyikes:

I don’t understand why women that are dressed immodestly, are allowed to recieve communion. We have a EM that will serve in a dress that looks like she came straight to church from the nightclub.

I have often amused myself with the ideal of going to mass dressed as a 19th century peasant women…as a from of silent protest against my priest condoning immodest Mass. 😃

There needs to be an episode of TLC’s “What Not To Wear”: “The Church Edition.” I know Stacey & Clinton would have a FIELD DAY at one of my parish’s Masses!

Since its so cold here, immodesty isn’t as much of a problem as much as downright slovenliness. Sunday, an EM was wearing an IOWA hoodie and jeans right up there on the altar.

The week before it was two teen gals in sweats who carried up the gifts! Not nice coordinated jog-suits but more like “I just got out of swim team practice” sweats. Ick.

There are COMFORTABLE and yet clean, stylish, put-together skirts and slacks out there for all ages to be able to put together a half-decent/respecatble outfit for Mass! I think some of the teens I’ve seen in sweaters and those knit gaucho/split skirts look dressier and yet comfy and age-appropriate. That’s just one example.

But regarding lingerie - I dread what I’m going to see in the summer months…

While I do experience the same initial anger, I am quick not to judge them. While it may be intentional, which would warrant reprimand, more often than not, girls don’t know any better. As long as men keep telling them they look beautiful with next to nothing on and as long as corporate America pushes this garbage down their throats, how are they supposed to know otherwise? Who’s telling them any different?

True - but then who is to teach them reverence in appearance at mass?

Probably not in Mass. This is something that needs to be done, by men in particular, *outside *of Mass in every other facet of life. I don’t mean walking up to a girl and saying “put some freakin’ clothes on!” but collectively being a visible sign fighting against immodesty. I mean, how are we supposed to teach modesty during Mass when outside of Mass men only foster it in women?

Edit: Although, this does not mean it is outside of a pastor’s bounds to use the pulpit and talk about it. In fact, I’ve heard of one parish that had a basket full of long skirts for women to put on whose skirts were shorter than the knees.
 
This topic got quite heated at my women’s Bible study last month and I was really surprised at the anger from one lady who said no one should give fraternal correction over super immodest attire. She said that we should all be glad they came to Mass. She must have missed the homilies from our last pastor about proper attire for Mass and about our duty to provide fraternal correction.

I said that I have whispered to someone, “I don’t know if you’re aware but the folks behind you can see your underwear when you sit down.” Also, “Did you know your skirt folded over when you sat down and now it is stuck up in the back.” I don’t think that is being uncharitable and perhaps the young ladies will get a hint that something is not quite right with their attire. I certainly would appreciate someone letting me know if my skirt became see-through in a particular light or if it was stuck in my pantyhose or something similar. I’m an adult woman who used to work with our teen ministry, so I try to give gentle nudges on these type of issues without causing embarassment.

I would caution any man against making any comment about a young lady’s attire because it could really turn ugly. Better to let a woman or the priest or deacon say something if need be.

I guess it would be safe to assume that she would have no problem with me arriving at Mass naked? I mean, at least I’m there…

Well you might be offered one of those skirts the parish has stashed away that you talked about…😃

Look at the above picture. A muffin top is where a woman wears a midriff exposing top and tight pants…causing her fat to spill over the top of her pants and giving the appearance of a muffin top.

I think the phrase was coined by NY Daily News
 
Frankly, I don’t know why anyone would EVER wear a muffin top shirt, whether at Mass or not.
BTW, it’s Benedict XVI, not the VI.
 
What is worse: a muffin top at Mass or a whale tail? Or are they equally offensive. I tend to think they are equally offensive.
