“Pope Francis has blocked a move by German bishops to allow Protestants married to Roman Catholics to receive communion in Catholic churches, a prospect that had alarmed conservatives.”

"Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia wrote that it would be ‘the first stage in opening communion to all Protestants … since marriage ultimately provides no unique reason to allow communion for non-Catholics’”.

This is old news now, and it’s since come out that Pope Francis actually agrees with the proposal, but wants to leave it up to individual bishops.

The German bishops proceeded to publish their document anyway, just without indicating that it has come from the German Bishops Conference - essentially anonymous authorship. Seems a bit underhanded.

Yes, exact same document that was held up by the Vatican before was approved by Pope Francis and published without the endorsement of the German Bishops’ Conference. It’s supposedly now just a “guiding” document instead of a binding one.

Another interesting point is that one of the main protestant bodies in German, the Evangelical Church in Germany, was lukewarm towards the document after it released because it did not address Catholics being able to receive protestant communion. I wonder if the German bishops start pushing for that next. One would think such a thing would be impossible, but I think many Catholics would have thought it impossible that such a document as this would have received papal approval until recently. I wouldn’t put anything past the German bishops and Pope Francis these days.

Nothing appears to be impossible with the German bishops. They forget that with regards to divine revelation, the Church is simply the mail carrier. The German bishops would rather open the envelope and edit the mail before it is delivered. Cdl Mueller said it well in a recent interview with regard to the German bishops: “on the agenda are: a blessing for homosexual couples, intercommunion with Protestants, relativizing the indissolubility of sacramental marriage, the introduction of viri probati and with it the abolition of priestly celibacy, approval for sexual relations before and outside of marriage. These are their goals, and to reach them they are willing to accept even the division of the bishops’ conference.” See what I mean about editing the mail???

Yes, I truly believe that the German bishops will not stop until they have completely open communion with everyone. Not to mention blessing gay marriage, recognizing divorce, and married priests.

The Archbishop of Paderborn is now the first. We are closer today to a schism than we were yesterday.
