A friend said he heard on the radio that Anglicans are considering joining the Catholic Church as a group. I’m guessing if this occurred, an Anglican rite would be formed that is similar to the current Eastern rite Catholic format.

I don’t know the details or whether this is accurate. Does anyone have information or articles about this? Do you think it’s probable?

I attended an evangelical Episcopal church for about 2 years, and I would be just thrilled if this Anglican-Catholic merger were to occur. What a testimony that would be to Christian unity!

Many individual Anglicans have joined the Catholic Church in the wake of the Robinson consecration. (A sexually active gay man who was elevated to Bishop.) Some have also joined the “continuing Anglican” groups, the Orthodox Church, Protestant denominations and others have faded away into “non attendance.”

Last year there was a rumor that an entire diocese (Albany) was planning on converting to Catholicism. Nothing came of it.

From what I have seen it is only individuals so I’m not sure if you will need to develop an Anglican Rite.

I think I know of what you are speaking here, and while it’s interesting, I doubt much will come from it. For one thing (and this is not a killer on the whole idea) it’s next to impossible that Rome will be intersted in a corporate reunion. The rule is always individual submission, with respect to Anglcians. It’s been tried before.

And there already is an Anglican Rite in the RCC, the Anglican Rite Use under the pastoral provision. They use a sort of Novus Ordo form of the 1979 ECUSA prayer book. It is not wide spread (maybe 6-8 parishes) and will most likely be limited to this generation (there is no provision to provide ot train priests for Anglican Usage parishes, they are all convert Anglicans).

How about an American Rite, dang it!!! We get to elect our own bishops, have referendums on church discipline, etc…

Don’t forget term limits! And a Theologians Bill of Rights! And a College of Laity (with power of the purse) as part of a bicameral twin to the College of Bishops! Diocese gerrymandering! Affirmative action for Protestants (who are under-represented)!

Don’t forget the congregants power to impeach abusive clergy! Hey, this is begining to sound more like the Episcopalian Church.

Go here to read about and see the beautiful Anglican Use Liturgy. This Anglican Church in San Antonio became Catholic as an entire congregation.

As a matter of fact , my wife and i have been studying to become catholics with the help of a Priest from St. Mary the Virgin , an Anglican use Catholic Church in Arlington Texas. This Parish --Priest, people and Building all were admitted by the Pope into the church a few years ago.

John, I’ve been to St. Mary the Virgins. Fr. Hawkins is on vacation with his wife. He seems like a good man.

There already exists an ‘Anglican Use’ Liturgy - interestingly it’s only used a few US parishes that were formerly Episcopalian and not in the UK.

However, it does exist, to aid those who are making the transition from Anglicanism to Catholicism. I don’t think the intent is for it to be a permanent alternative to the TLM or the NO, but if more ENTIRE Anglican or Episcopalian parishes convert it may need to be continued.

Boy, I wish we could find a way to differentiate between using the term “Rite” to refer to a specific liturgy vs “Rite” meaning a sui juris Church.

The Anglican Use is not a sui juris “Rite” but it is a liturgical “Rite” within the “Latin Rite”

Right?😉

The Anglican group that has petitioned Rome for reunion is the Traditional Anglican Communion. There are about 400,000 worldwide. You can find TAC’s petition on this website:

Wow, Jon, that is wonderful. As of today, do you know what the status of their petition? Has the Vatican responded yet? Pardon me for being naive on this subject. I haven’t read or heard anything about this before. Would this pertain to all the members of the TAC, all 400,000 of them? All in all, it is truly a testament to the Holy Spirit working in the hearts of these beloved Christians. What a blessing.

Absolutely right and I stumbled in my words. I often have to correct folks on that very point. Don’t know how I came to call the Use a Rite. Age, maybe.

OTOH, what the TAC sometimes seems to think they are pursuing is a sui juris status. Another reason I think this is all smoke and mirrors.

Dominus vobsicum,
No one knows the status of anything, assuming there is something to know. It’s a topic that apears here regularly. If you search the board, you can find many threads on it. It has been a subject of curiousity among Anglicans, especially the sort of Anglican that the TAC is:Continuing Anglicans, for around 12 years now. I am extremely dubious that anything significant will come of it, in the end. Whenever that might be.

irishmac,
To my knowledge, nothing has happened yet, and I don’t know what all of them would do should they be accepted. I do know that there would be a lot of issues to work out. Would they all be accepted without going through RCIA? I think they have married bishops- what would happen to them, etc.?
I recently spoke to one of their priests with questions and interests of mine, so my knowledge, too, is limited.
