I recently attended a friends, who is a christian, not catholic. They had a visiting speaker who they called a prophet. He basically gave one on one advice to different people in the church. What exactly is a catholic response to prophets like this?

Hmmm. Sounds a little fishy to me. The only churches I am familiar with who claim a “prophet” after Jesus are the Muslims and the LDS.

Could you expand please? Some people have “the gift of prophecy” noted in Scripture. Could that be what the man was? Maybe a man who prays with people and helps in the discernment process?

Religions other than LDS have “prophets”. These are some of the “new” religions who actually teach parishoners how to be prophets. How to tell the “future” for themselves and to counsel others. Dream reading is also a part of some of these religions. I find this a bit frightening.

The response would be basically that they are false prophets.
