It appears that the two girls that were sentenced to the penal colony made the mistake of telling the appeals judge that:

"“We’re all innocent … the verdict should be overturned. The Russian justice system has been discredited.”

I have a feeling that if they would just have owned up to their guilt rather than making excuses and attacking legitimate authority, they would have had their sentences lessened or outright commuted.

Brace yourself, for the comments condemning Putin’s decision are coming! 😃

Indeed they are!! Putin is a tyrant!! How dare he silence the voice of the VOICELESS!!!111

😉

…But, seriously. Two years’ imprisonment? It’s not like he’s ordering them to be executed or something! Hopefully those two years will give them time to reflect on what they have done. Mother of God, pray for them. 🙂

Sorry, can’t resist. 😃
If I did this on FaceBook, I could be reported for hate speech. So much for liberal-progressive “tolerance”.

2 years? That is very light. It seems to me that the Russian government had listened to the suggestion made by the Russian Orthodox Church that their punishments be tempered by mercy.

Sent to the -]Gulag/-] penal colony Ouch!

I guess Uncle -]Joe/-] Vlad is doing best for Moszah Russha. 🤷

What sentence do you think would be just for verbal dissent?

Here’s the problem.
They did their protest in a cathedral. Had they done their protest somewhere else, it may not warrant much of a penalty.

One member of the controversial performance art collective ***** Riot will be freed on parole but the other two are Siberia-bound, after a Moscow appeals court upheld their sentence of two years in a penal colony Wednesday…

What they did was Satanic and caused a lot of public scandal. They need to be punished. Two years seems appropriate.

Exactly. They could have just formed a Facebook group called “We Hate Putin” and posted their spew there. Or held their protest at a “neutral” venue.

But once they entered a cathedral, their actions became blasphemous and a cause for scandal. The Orthodox church is as much a part of Russian culture as a Hindu temple is ours. If I went into a temple in the middle of a service and started yelling “The PM is a dope!”, you bet I would end up in hot water. 😛

When the Patriarch used his position as head of the Russian Orthodox Church to publicly endorse Putin he invited counter protest and can hardly object if some of that dissent follows him home into his cathedral. I’d also still like to know what you think would have been a just sentence.

Fortunately in the US, you’d first have to prove that Satan actually exists. Speech that doesn’t scandalize someone isn’t worth defending.

Prove it.

Also, RPRPsych said a better answer than I did.

From a wiki article on the Patriarch:

On 8 February 2012 at a meeting of religious leaders in Moscow, Kirill described the Putin era as “a miracle of God” and criticised his opponents. He said that those who were demonstrating for democratic reform and the rule of law were emitting “ear piercing shrieks”

Still no opinion on what a just sentence should have been?
