Please, please, please turn off or silence your cell phones BEFORE Mass.

This past Sunday during the consecration a person’s cell phone rang, it was so loud, and to top it off she couldn’t find it in her purse/over the shoulder suit case so it kept ringing and ringing. So very rude and thoughtless.

If you are on call or something serious like that just put it on vibrate and keep it on you (in your pocket, on your belt, something).

This has unfortunately happened more than a couple of times since I’ve been going to Mass…the one time a person’s phone went off as the priest was elevating the Host…all you could hear was the first notes of Handel’s Messiah going off. VERY disruptive!

The people that I have known who are waiting for a phone call (because they’re on call, or have important family business to take care of) have always put their phones on vibrate, sat in the back, and if it went off they would quietly leave to answer it (unfortunately I’ve also seen someone answer their phone and talk all the way up to receiving Communion…thank goodness I’ve only seen that happen once). So, at least in my experience, the people who have a real reason to have their phones on aren’t the ones causing the disruption…

I was cured of that many months ago. I tend to forget I have a cell phone only a handful of people have my number and I rarely get calls. As a gag, dh set my ring tone for him to go off with his voice saying, “Hello, honey, it’s me, what are you doing? Pick up your phone!” I was reading the epistle at 7am Mass, when he called me. :o . . . Cell phone in my purse in my pew. . . I ignored it and kept reading, fortunately, he must have remembered where I was and hung up quickly, because it only went off 1 1/2 times, but I’ll never forget to turn off my cell again.

They make an announcement at our Parish before each mass…but is still happends. I have gotten into the practice of turning my phone off … since there is only one person I want to talk to while I’m in Church 😃 .

Too bad we can’t do what the Israelies to, they have signal blocking devices in all the synagogs so you can’t get a signal when you are in worship.

One evening a few yeas ago there was one lady who’s cell phone kept going off during Mass. She would walk outside with it ringing the whole way and answer it. Then come back inside where the scene would be repeated. Finally when she left one time, the priest said, “I hope that’s God calling.” I can only assume she was dealing with a ‘situation’ and wasn’t savvy enough to figure out how to silence the phone.

Last year about this time, I was at the same church, and during the Eucharistic prayer, I kept hearing someone else talking. There was a lady behind and to my left TALKING ON HER CELL PHONE - not even stepping into the vestibule. I couldn’t believe her nerve! This priest doesn’t put up with any mess, but he kept right on going never missing a beat, except to motion an usher up to the altar to whisper something to him (to throw the lady out, I assumed). What I could not see was that the lady’s husband was having a medical emergency. The fire department and the ambulance soon arrived and the man was on his way to the hospital before Mass was over.

I have to say I haven’t been very sympathetic in the past … until on Tuesday I switched mine to silent (or so I thought - mustn’t have done it properly) and it went off loud and clear in the middle of the Gospel. Talk about embarrassing! :o Luckily I could reach it fairly quickly. It’s definitely going OFF from now on :yup:

The poor woman’s husband having a medical emergency in Church though

a thought I just had. even thought death is sad.
if you die in church during mass, you won’t have to wait for them to send a angel for you, since HE is there already, you would have the honor of walking back with him. what a great honor that would be.

:amen: - can’t think of any place I’d rather be when I go. Even better, having just received him in the Eucharist :angel1:

I used to just mine on vibrate until one Mass someone called me like 4 times while I was trying to pray, so I just turn it off now.

Agreed, this is very annoying. I dont even bring mine in to Church. I’ve been hearing alot of phones ringing lately. It really needs to stop.

When a cell phone goes off during mass, it always seems to happen during the consecration. Several weeks ago, a woman actually answered her phone and walked out of the church engaged in conversation. I don’t know her circumstances, but she should have at least had it on vibrate, and not answered until she was outside.

Also, last Sunday, I was in our perpetual adoration chapel, spending time with Jesus. Twice within 5 minutes cell phones went off. Perhaps a sign needs to be posted there.

Gosh it has been almost 20 years but My confirmation sponser (mother of my best friend in grade school) died during Mass and pretty much what you said is what everyone was saying at the visitation

We don’t have one right now, but when we did, I just left it in the car. If you’re not like a doctor or something…or have kids that might need you…I mean, can’t it wait till you get out to the parking lot?

This does rather introduce the subject of “before the Mass starts,” as a matter of announcements, does it not? Let me remind you to turn your cell phone off. There is a care in the parking lot with license plate ____________ that has its lights on.

My favoriate was an Easter Vigil service when I was young and they didn’t simply lock the doors to the church but let everyone inside and then a younger priest said, "This is not a prisonl, you can sit in here if you wish [while the blessing of the new fire was taking place outside]. Why was I inside? I was the organist. I had to get ready before going outside to partake in the entire ceremony.

This recently happen in our parish this last Friday morning. Not only did this ladies cell phone go off but she actually answered and was talking, not long but enough to hear. Week day mass is really quite and not many people there so it stood out. She is a regular and often helps lead us in song. I was really surprised.
