I don’t get it. I was just listening to revelation on cd and the book says that, “God will make shorter the days of tribulation for his elect”, and that, “He will take us up and spare us tribulation”. I am paraphasing, of course, I don’t have the bible right now. thanks though!:o Help please, isn’t this a protestant concept or do catholics believe that we will be taken before the tribulation too?

Catholic do not believe in the rapture.

Christ’s body wasn’t spared tribulation on the cross, neither will His “body” on earth during the last days. Christ’s death and resurrection will be fulfilled in the crucifixion of the Church followed by the creation of the New Jerusalem - the new heaven and earth.

That said, those who receive eternal life will be spared the final, general judgment - but that’s not the same as the tribulation.

tm30 is correct. Catholics do not subscribe to the idea of the “rapture” as articulated in such places as the “Left Behind” series of fiction. Here are some good articles that address the Catholic position on the subject:
This should get you started and give you a good idea of the problems with the rapture’s novel approach to end-times theology. 👍

The Church believes in the Rapture in the sense that we WILL be taken up, but this will happen as the bible describes, On the last day, after the dead is risen. It doesn’t say last day before the tribulation, or the last day before the anti-Christ takes over… it just says last day. Period

‘Left Behind’ Rapture is a man made false teaching.
History…
A guy by the name of John Darby back in like 1825ish developed this idea as a ‘time line’ to the apocalypses. It was NOT accepted by many outside the dispensational world. It was picked up by Schofield and put in his Bible as ‘Fact’.

This ‘fact’ held little wait over protestant Christianity for many many years until the late seventies/ early eighties when books like ‘Late Great planet earth’ came out. It still held a small minority until Tim Lehaye came around and published his books… Now… it is posted as fact.

As a note, many of your ardent ‘Left behind’ Supporters are also rabid anti-catholics. I’ve heard Tim Lehaye refer to the Catholic church as the Roman Club that has ten ‘heads’. In his Books, the Pope is the leader of the One World Religion.

SO, what about prior to John Darby…
Simple enough…

In the 1700’s, a Catholic Monk DID contemplate the idea in a thought experiment, but he didn’t take it too far (don’t have reference, so please don’t shoot me)

Prior to this, the only thing you have is ONE reference by someone named psudeo-efrim (sp). But, his one passage may not be referring to rapture at all.

In other words…

There is no history, or validity to it…

If Rapture as taught by ‘left behind’ is true, why then did no one relay hear about it for almost 1800 years?

IN Christ

Take a quick listen to THIS - it may help your understanding of what the Rapture is.

Revelation 7:14

I answered, “Sir, you know.”
And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

This verse specifically states that Christians will not be spared from the tribulation.

There will be no third coming of Jesus Christ. Alot of Protestant’s have capitalized off this made up theology, there is a whole series of books and even a video game! Do not buy into this nonsense.

If you dont get it then that means you are on the right track.

There is nothing to “get” because as everyone as already said the Rapture as it is popularly called is a Protestant invention of the 1800s. Not only that not all Protestants believe in the Rapture, and those who do cant even agree on when it will occur.

This is what the Church teaches:

When each of us dies, our souls are immediately taken to the presence of God and judged. This is called the Particular Judgment. At this point we begin our eternal destiny. If we are going to hell, our souls go directly there. If we are deemed worthy of heaven, our souls will go directly to heaven, or if we are going to heaven but are in need of purification, we may go to Purgatory first for a while (everyone in Purgatory will eventually go to heaven). Whatever our fate, our souls will stay there (heaven or hell) until the end of time, at which time the Second Coming will occur.

At the Second Coming at the end of time, those Christians still alive will be taken to heaven (what some Protestants think of as of “the rapture”). Then will occur the General Judgment. At that time the souls of the living and the dead will be reunited with their bodies and brought together in God’s presence and judged before all. Those who have already been judged in the Particular Judgment will be brought from wherever their souls were -heaven, hell or Purgatory-- and have their judgment confirmed before all, so that both the justice and mercy of God will be manifest to all.

After this, time and Purgatory will be no more and all will enter with their souls and bodies into their eternal destiny, either hell or heaven.

This is an extremely bare-bones sketch, so if you want to get the details, see the five articles I linked below:

In addition, you have to learn to recognize erroneous teachings about the End Times popularized by fundamentalists. In other words, toss out the “Left Behind” and “Late, Great Planet Earth” baloney. Here are some resources to help you develop some discernment in these areas:

Here’s a website with several articles from a Catholic perspective regarding this subject. The writer is Carl Olsen, the author of the best selling book “Will Catholics Be Left Behind?”

I’d also recommend going to the Catholic Answers home page and putting “Rapture” or “Left Behind” into the “Search” feature. You’ll find several good articles there from reliable writers. Here is one of their Special Reports on this:

Way to go, Fidelis! I don’t think there’s a Catholic resource on the Rapture that you didn’t link to! I’m starting a “Rapture” subfolder in my Favorites and linked to all your articles (if you don’t mind ;)). Great job! 👍

Better still is John Martignoni’s
The Rapture and the Bible
Code:
What will really happen on "The Last Day"
…and then there is my own humble offering on my blog. The Rapture?

LOL if I were a Protestant I would be afraid to believe in the Rapture after going through all that. The way those apologist rip that doctrine apart I would have thought I were going through the very Tribulation the rapture was supposed to rescue me from.

👍

The Church believes in the Rapture in the sense that we WILL be taken up, but this will happen as the bible describes, On the last day, after the dead is risen. It doesn’t say last day before the tribulation, or the last day before the anti-Christ takes over… it just says last day.
I think the Didache, teach a Postribulation Rapture, the Rapture is AFTER the Tribulation, after the Antichrist. Not Before.
