I know this might sound silly, but i dont want to offend God.

My mum wants me to put rat poison down, to kill some mouses that are under my floor boards. They where making so much noise they woke me up at 4.Oclock in the morning, because they where chewing through the wood. I have no problem with killing them, but i wont if God doesnt want me to.

It’s a defensive act against a non-human animal (over which we have dominion - you are an omnivore, right?). I think you’re on ok ground here.

That said, if you want a practical way to catch-and-release them into the wilderness and it makes you feel better to do it, go for it. Here’s a link on the how-to, but there are a number of others if you simply google for them.

God Bless,

There is nothing really wrong with using rat poison, but if you use it, there’s no telling where the mice or rats will be when they die. You may notice something stinking a month later before you find it. Get the mouse traps (or rat traps, if they are rats) that you bait with cheese or peanut butter that have springs on them and put those down (just make sure they’re away from where kids go, and be careful not to set them off accidentally- the rat traps can break an adult’s fingers). They sound cruel, but mice and rats that die from those die quicker, and less painfully than those that are poisoned.

In my youth in Ireland we used either cheese or bacon to bait mouse traps. Actually, we didn’t have much use for them, as we usually had a good cat…

After moving to Trinidad, the first time I needed to set mouse traps I used cheese - the smart little creatures knew how to set the traps off and then calmly ate the cheese!!

I tried different baits and finally had tremendous success with - curried beef!! This was so irresistible to them, they completely forgot how to set off the traps first!! I caught six mice in one night with three traps! I had set one in the kitchen, one in the living room and one in my bedroom. Just as I was drifting off to sleep I heard the snap. I thought of getting up and dumping the body, but was too sleepy. Then a few minutes later I heard strange noises - the trap had flipped upside down when Mr. Mouse had been caught. Another mouse was so tempted by the bait that he was trying to flip the trap over so as to get at it. Seems he couldn’t care less that his brother, sister, whatever, had been caught in the trap!! So, I got up, emptied the trap into the dustbin and re-set it. Mr. Mouse 2 was dead in the trap when I got up in the morning.

Then I went into the living room - to find two mice (one on each side) caught in the trap. I picked up the trap and walked into the kitchen to empty it - only to see two more dead mice - one dead in the trap and the other lying dead beside it.

Curried beef! They’ve got good taste, these Trinidadian mice!!

That’s why I often use peanut butter. It sticks to the trap (plus it’s cheap- and since I don’t like it very much, I have few other uses for it. I’m not going to waste cheese, which I do like.)

Many poisons are based on cumadin [Sp?] a blood thinner. It usually causes them to leave the house seeking water. Otherwise they mummify and are odorless.

Commercial rodent poisons, as opposed to general poisons, contain an emetic which causes all animal bur rodents to vomit; rodents are unable to vomit. This makes them safer around pets and children; though one should still take all possible precautions.

I’ve had a problem with mice in my apartment all year.

What I would recommend is picking up a Ratzapper. You can do an internet search and find it. Its relatively cheap…reusable and in my mind anyway humane.

Its basically a box that has an electrical plate in the bottom. When the mice or rats go in they are zapped with a fairly sizeable voltage and are killed instantly. All you do then is pick up the box and dump the mouse in the garbage.

I had a real problem when I got it and within 2 weeks all the mice in my apartment were gone. In fact since its spring one got in I think over the weekend and I found him this morning in the trap.

Its the only thing I’ve found that works. The mice in my apartment were smart enough to get the peanut butter off the snap traps and they won’t go into the twist traps.
