Just a real question for you all, I’m looking for a specific term that is used to describe the way in which the church assimilates other cultures and uses them to build on the faith/culture of the church, transculturalisation??? Interculturalisation???.. Something like that.

Also if anyone knows of any good URLs on the subject it would be greatly appreciated.

God bless.

Don’t know if this will help, but here’s a rather well-known comment by Cardinal Newman on the subject:

We are told in various ways by Eusebius, that Constantine, in order to recommend the new religion to the heathen, transferred into it the outward ornaments to which they had been accustomed in their own. It is not necessary to go into a subject which the diligence of Protestant writers has made familiar to most of us. The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps, and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holydays and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields; sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the East, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison, are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the Church (Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine)

the word is inculturation and you can find documents about it on the US bishops website. It actually means conforming the culture to the Gospel, not the other way around, but sometimes that key distinction gets lost in translation.

Inculturation

LEVI:

In the encyclical Fides et Ratio you will find towards the back a beautiful exposition of how the CC should embrace an indegenous culture…what can and cannot be done, what is proper to what can and cannot be taken in by the Universal Church. It’s a great balance of Charity towards the culture and natural truth to be absorbed from them. It’s good stuff.

in XT.

I’m actually doing some anthropology research about Christianity and inculturation…I also wouldn’t mind some more resources to look about this entire process. Now to go look at that encyclical Aquinas mentioned. 😃
