I’m curious about any communities (read: Religious Orders) for consecrated folk that incorporate communal life with both men AND women. Of course, living arrangements would have to be in separate houses. But I’m talking more about their communal prayer, apostolate, meal times, etc. Communities where these men and women consecrate themselves to God through the evangelical counsels, but still share life together as brothers and sisters.

Anyone have any resources I could look at?

That’s along the lines of a double monastery to a certain extent. I know of one Benedictine monastery in the Northeast US where the men sit opposite the women during the office.

I am also thinking Christ in the Desert monastery in the SW US has men and women on the same property.

Order of the Sacred Hearts in Ohio, as well.

Hermits of Bethlehem in the Heart of Jesus, possibly.

Newer Communities would be more likely to have such a scenario.

St. Scholastica’s priory in Petersham, MA is a shared property of Benedictines who pray the office together. I think they are cloistered for the rest of the day. Their daily mass and hours are reverent and beautiful. I have suggested to a few women and 1 man that they should consider them during their vocation search.

That’s the one! I was on their site earlier today, but saw no reference to the monks joining them.

The men and women sit on opposite sides of their chapel.

They alternate when chanting the divine office. The nuns take part in the mass where appropriate.

Both the mass and office are in Latin except on Sunday where they have an English mass. If I understood the Mother Superior correctly, they chant all 150 psalms weekly. Masses and hours are open to the public except for Commons, and the Office of Readings.

They have a beautiful property that is off the beaten path, and it is surrounded by conservation land.

I think the nuns just took on.3 novices.

They have a nice guesthouse for retreats, those discerning or people who just want to unplug and grow closer to God.

If they were closer to my home, I would attend their masses frequently. Their religious services always make me feel closer to God.

The Order of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts does everything together. I think the Benedictines that are talked about only come together for prayers but this community prays, eats, recreates, and does works of mercy together, They are together pretty much together all day unless they are in their cells which of course are separated into the men’s dormitory in their cloister and the cells in the cloistered part of the main building for the sisters.

I called the Order of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts and spoke to one of their brothers. He said they’re still a Private Association of the Faithful and hoping to become Public soon. Once they do, he said, they’ll have to have some separation between the men and women.
He also told me about Jerusalem Community - they’re in Canada - a more established order of both men and women. They pretty much only pray together daily and share common meals on Solemnities, if I understood him correctly. So, similar to the Benedictines in Petersham. He made it sound like that would be the case for just about any established order for both men and women.
