When I was at St. Meinrad, any seminarian doing pastoral hospital work could and did wear a Roman collar.
When I was at De Paul University, there were undergaraduate Vincentian seminarians taking summer classes. They were required to were RC’s as well.

You must be ordained to wear one, it is a symbol of the office (well more service than office). that is wholly inapproriate.

All seminarians wear the roman collar at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Pennsylvania. It is commonly regarded as one of the most orthodox seminaries in the United States. I hardly think that Cardinal Rigali would have the seminarians doing something “wholly inappropriate.”

They are worn by seminarians in Detroit as well. Our parish had a seminarian doing his parish intership with us k a few years ago and he was always dressing in clerics.

Most of the older photos of seminarians I’ve seen always shows them in black cassocks, the pre-Vat II clerics, so I don’t think this is a new development.

In the Church, the roman collar is a symbol of the clergy, but not necessarily ordained clergy. I’m pretty sure anyone who is pursuing a vocation to the clergy may wear one.

Yes, that is true. I am a seminarian and we are allowed to wear collars and cassocks for liturgical duties.

Mea culpa, mea culpa…
well then i must be wrong, i apologize. sorry for the confusion.

Yes, seminarians wear collars on campus, some still wear cassocks, but not on the apostolate. They wear a black suit, white shirt, and black tie so as not to be confused with a deacon/priest.
