The Benedictines have the Order of St. Benedict to go by, but what about the other major male orders (Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits, etc.)? I’m reading the rule of St. Benedict now, but have no clue if other orders have such rules written out by their founders.

The Dominican Order adopted the Rule of St Augustine, mainly due to its simplicity and adaptability. A very sensible move.

Well, the Dominicans follow the Rule of St. Augustine. The Lay Dominicans, however, follow the Rule of St. Dominic.

The Carmelites have the Rule of St. Albert. He wasn’t the founder; they were already living as hermits on Mt. Carmel when they asked him to give them a Rule.

That is true, however there have been five rules for lay Dominicans, the first being promulgated by Munio de Zamora in 1285.

The Visitatandines that I’m talking to follow the Rule of St. Augustine. The Franciscans follow the Rule of St. Francis.

The Jesuits and most of the other religious orders belonging to the family of Clerics Regular do not have Rules, but rather Constitutions, which give a greater ability for change, so as to allow the orders to validly adapt the execution of their ministry and life in light of their specific charisms as the needs of the order change over time. That being said, many of these orders were influenced by the Rule of St. Basil in their original formulation.

The Rule of St. Basil was also the basis for the Rule of St Albert of Jerusalem.

The Rule of St. Benedict was culled from other Rules, as well. Included was the Rule of St. Augustine, and the harsh Rule of the Master. (I prefer St. Benedict’s moderation). I posted a link some time ago regarding the components of the Rule of St. Benedict.

I also posted another thread where a number of orders who follow the Rule of St. Augustine were posted.

As a secular Franciscan we follow a rule set forth that is based on the rule delevoped by St. Francis for his brother minor or lesser brothers

Are these rules/constitutions available in a book format? I bought the rule of St. Benedict on amazon, and I’d like to have the rest of them to read in between classes.

Some of them are. A few of the older rules like the Rule of St. Basil are very hard to find.
