Same-sex marriage in Canada

News reports today state that at least two members of the federal cabinet will resign rather than support a same-sex marriage bill expected to be introduced soon in the House of Commons. The fight on this one is not over.

Good for them… They can’t be easy.
 
I must admit ignorance how the Canadian government works. If they resign, would it only increase the likelihood that their replacements would support the bill?
 
If they were to resign, they would be replaced. However, unlike cabinet members in the US, those in Canada are voting members of the legislature. And, right now, the governing party is in a minority position in the House of Commons. A loss of two votes could be critical in determining whether the same-sex marriage would get passed into law.
