Has the Spy Wednesday evening tenebrae (Matins for Maundy Thursday) been surpressed or is it that parishes no longer do it, only religious communities. I see that the Society of St. John Cantius (a traditional society based in Chicago that is in union with the church) still does it every year. I would be interested in reading more about this Holy Week tradition.

As far as I can tell, I’ve only seen it celebrated in the Chicago area, and lately, only at Cantius.

Tenebrae is suggested as an option in many of the popular missalettes used by Catholic parishes, so it certainly has not been supressed, probably used only in parishes that are already celebrating LOTH in some way. In my former parish (rather liberal in many ways) it was introduced by the same crowd that brought in Taize and Sunday vespers, and did classes on LOTH. a beautiful tradition and strikes me as something that could very well be adapted for families.

Last week I offered to organize Tenebrae in my home parish next year and he was all in favor of it.

To the OP: At Holy Apostles Seminary in Connecticut we had Tenebrae. I hope it spreads to the local parishes from there.

It’s done at the cathedral, also.

And out in the 'burbs, which includes the archdiocese and two other dioceses…

We had one tonight. In fact, I got home about an hour ago.

We are in the South.

Just found out that the Sheil Center at Northwestern has one scheduled this year.
