What Pope first provided our teachings on abortion, and where?

Lazerlike:

Ola! Just a quick qualification. Humanae Vitae came out in the late 60’s but the teaching against abortion has always been part of the moral teachings of the church…it’s in the Didache dating 70AD.

Just making sure that the misconception that the church just drew the line in the sand about 50 years ago is not true…it goes all the way back.

Thanks.

The Apostolic Fathers wrote against abortion. The Letter of Barnabas, written about A.D. 70, says:
Thou shalt not slay the child by procuring abortion; nor, again, shalt thou destroy it after it is born. (Chapter XIX.)

And, the Didache, written about A.D. 80, says:
And the second commandment of the Teaching; You shall not commit murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not commit pederasty, you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, you shall not practice magic, you shall not practice witchcraft, you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill that which is born. (Chapter 2.)
